2008 Likely To Be One Of The Top-ten Warmest Years

This is another case of choosing data that supports a desired conclusion. They have chosen years 1961-1990 to represent long term average global temprature.

If you at average temperature look over a much longer period of time we are in a relatively cool period. "During the last 2 billion years the Earth's climate has alternated between a frigid "Ice House", like today's world, and a steaming "Hot House", like the world of the dinosaurs." The average temperature has fluctuated between 12 degC and 22 degC so in modern time we are actually relatively cool at an average of 14 degC. But that is part of the problem. Geologically speaking we are relatively cool so natural global climate cycles are pushing temperatures up and with the human contribution of CO₂ to the atmosphere among other things we are speeding things up and just making things worse.

If it makes you feel any better, The decade of 1998-2007 is the warmest on record, according to data sources obtained by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

"on record" means since we've been using thermometers (1850)

and yes, at least one of my neighbors has been to the moon.

I always liked the 'news' report showing someone at a weather related diasaster stating..."I have lived here for X years I have never seen anything like this. It is a catastrophy" And of course the 'news' then seques into more 'humanity is the only cause of global warming' spiel.

Statistics are often used to justify any official position.

Here it is January 5th 2008, and we have already had one day of 37 degrees Celsius.

Mind you it is presently midsummer.

I'm not surprise , every year the world gets warmer & warmer because of global warming and green house effect.If we could only invert it

Actually, it hasn't been getting warmer every year. It peaked at around 2004 and now it has been going back down (according to NOAA) since.

That is why they say "top-ten warmest" because it has been receding, but it still is pretty warm.

I have saved my response to all global warming threads as a word.doc so as to just cut and paste as needed. So here goes:

Every scientist agrees that there was once an ice age. There is not an ice age today. Global warming is not new!

No one ever said global warming is new. In fact, if you look at the past temperature cycles, we should be in a hot spot right now. And we are.

That has nothing to do with the idea that we are screwing up the natural processes of the planet.

The argument that I keep hearing over and over sounds like this to me:

"5 years ago we had a lot of rain and my basement flooded. That's why I don't worry about that leak in my water pipe - because I know basement flooding is caused by natural processes."

I shall update my word.doc to say: "...global warming unexpected, unecessary or undesireable...". Perhaps will include statement of "homeostasis".
