Not Yet an Endangered Species

Posted January 13, 2008 8:34 AM

An old joke states that televisions will never replace newspapers because you can't swat a fly with a television set. Still, several companies have tried to create an electronic replacement for the printed page. The most recent entry from Amazon.com holds more promise than its predecessors because it permits wireless downloading of material. But according to this review from The Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro, we ain't there yet.

I don't know that we ever will be there yet. With all of the different kinds of documents I deal with electronically, I still find it easier and simpler to whiff through the pages of a book to find that bit of information I remember - being - just - ah, there, some 3/4 of the way down the left-hand page about 2/3 of the way through the book. Have yet to find a way to make that happen on a computer (or any) screen.
