Plasco produces its first watts from waste

Posted February 08, 2008 9:14 AM

From CBC | Technology & Science News:

A demonstration waste-to-energy plant in Ottawa has finally turned its first load of trash into power. The Plasco Energy Group plant at the Trail Road landfill announced its success Thursday, 17 months after construction began on the project in partnership with the City of Ottawa.

The City of Ottawa, already has a project in which it extracts Methane gas from garbage in a landfill site to power a generator that dumps electricity back into the grid.

The Plasco project actually consumes garbage in a low oxygen plasma that geneates Syngas to power electric generators A great Idea to divert garbage from landfill sites and recycle materials for building roads etc...

I hope this technology catches on so we can clean up the mess we humans make on this delicate globe.

Hi Laserlover

I must admit that I did not read the article before I posted.

We are wasting ourselves out of a planet and doing something to reverse it must be the way to go. I sure do hope it catches on.

The cost may be a bit stiff but at this stage any additional power will be very handy.

Initial cost and ongoing maintenance for tip-site methane generation plants are high and the gas stream content also varies quite a bit during the day due to such things as temperature, chemical interaction in the landfill, humidity, etc (also it is rather corrosive). In the end its all worth it. The plant I have just finished commissioning runs at about 8MW continuously (for about the next 20+ years). Far better than just burning the gas in a flame stack and releasing it into the atmosphere. We also have another such plant down the road from us in a closed-down tip site.

I must say that the active tip site is one of the nicest sites I have been on (its built right next to a country club and restaurant). It's not every tip site where you can quite happily walk out side for a bit of fresh air.

It's always been a difficult problem with rubbish disposal.

The full costs of disposal have to be weighed up against the full costs of separation/re-use, and replacement of the materials.

Hello jack of all trades

Is that latest rubbish gasification/turbine plant on the North Shore Rosedale Road site?

Kind Regards....
