Fighting the Technology

Posted April 16, 2008 10:15 AM

The love affair between developed countries and their electronic infrastructure is aggravating the problem of global-warning. Yet computers, networks, and accompanying systems are critical to the operation of your business. There is no way to return to the "thrilling days of yesteryear" when you did everything on paper and physical files. What is the alternative? Is your company aware of the carbon cost of the equipment you need to boost your efficiency and productivity? Are you taking steps to minimize that impact? Can you reduce the number of systems you use, the amount of server power that you need for your network, or other hardware resources?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Engineering Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Engineering Management today.

Global warming is the least of it, in the end...and there will be one, all mankind will have depleted every natural resource that exists. The only restriction to our proliferation is the amount of us. Because Humans have traded value for paper, our resources have become our existence. A global economy will only exist if some entity controls the resources. At some point in the survival plan for humanity, there will be a need to thin the heard. My question is who will that be. I just wounder how much will a vaccine for the next pandemic cost. I figure either barrels or maybe tons will cover it. I wounder what the copay will be!

Wow,

You sure got up on the wrong side. Yes, there will be an end to things as we know them and entropy comes to all, but how can you live your life looking only at the dark side. It's easy to get caught up with looking at "the big picture" and lose perspective on the here and now. Of course there are plenty of people who do it the other way around and they are just as unbalanced. Will you seriously change any minds with your doom and gloom? Is there any positive contribution you can make to help stem the tide of human ignorance?

When you have done all you can do to stand; stand therefore, having your loins girt with truth, your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace . . .

One thing that would help slow down the concept of turning natural resources into garbage as fast as possible is too tax and regulate all resources so that when anyone starts to think of making a product there are lots of trials and research done to make the best use of all raw materails and even recycled materials.

This wave of profit motivated product devolpement with a short life span is not good for anyone except those seeking quick profits.

I am sure the people who do this for a living would not agree with me since their income depends on the constant turn over of natual resources to trash.

I still follow my grandfather teaching on rebuilt, repair, and re engineer to get all the value I can from any equipment we have. Buying new products are long hard thought decisions around here.

The U.S. Dollar seems to be the problem to me since they are Debt dollars. The Federal Reserve dollar has no real value till someone signs a debt note.

People have been encrouaged to "GO BUY SOMETHING" like they are drug addicts and that is their fix. Why not "SAVE" .

Amen, I feel that we are too fixated on double digit growth and innovation of items we really don't need. Why the h#ll do I need a phone that plays movies??? Why would I want to increase my trips to the eye doctor and chiropractor because I felt the need to watch a movie on my phone vs talk to the person next to me. We have a self perpetuating economy because we continually buy crap that we don't need and will throw away in a year and be forced to go and buy the replacement piece of crap.

Back to basics - I carry a cell phone because my current job requires it. I chose the free one on the plan. I drive a 10yr old car that I maintain because I could pay cash for it. My wife stays at home with our children because we didn't want someone else raising them, she elected to stay home because I made more $. I gladly would have switched if she made more. etc, etc, etc...
