UAVs: Flying Your Way?

Posted April 26, 2008 9:09 AM

According to recent articles in Network World and elsewhere, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will soon be used for much more than military roles. The article says they are being prepped for everything from surveying the conditions of highways to looking for pot growers. Manned helicopters are already used in routine cleaning of electrical high-voltage power lines. Do you see future possibilities for UAVs in monitoring industries' outside plant or other such applications?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

They need to talk to the FAA I guess would be a first thing to do before making this article.

UAV's used to be easy. but Post 9/11 the FAA has put a almost TOTAL No Possible way that they will happen.

We have discussed this with them for well over 3 years now. and the ONLY legal UAV is in the small model hobby aspect, and NOTHING else is being allowed.

And what that article is describing in NO WAY will the FAA allow it.

And if you blow them off and get caught, they are DEADLY serious about it. it was like a 250 grand fine and 10 years prison. so It's NOT going to happen.

Here in the UK the police are using small UAV's in towns and city's to watch out for criminals and people who drop litter! The UAV's are a small type of helicopter that are run on long life batteries, there are four rotors and they have a CCTV camera mounted on them that watch everybody. We law abiding citizens do not like them, but we cannot stop their use!!!

Really? I know the UK has been taking a lot of rights away, but did they take away your right to vote now?

Rights, what rights?

Here in the UK every town and city has a town hall, this is where the local government meet and carry out their duties. One of their duties now is to use the new anti terrorist laws to spy on a town or cities population no matter if they are not terrorists. They are by law entitled to listen to our telephone conversations and read our emails to friends or other members of our family!

Our government is now employing a group of official snoopers to question us about all our intimate details, ie. how many times we have sex pr. week, if we are hetrosexual or homosexual, etc, etc. If they come to me I shall tell them to mind their own bloody business!!!

No, we in the UK have not really had any rights for many hundreds of years, the last time was in 1212 with the signing of the Magna Carta.

There will be a lot of resistance to doing this from commercial and GA pilots!

We have the same problem in our little community. The police bought a UAV and can't get it airborne because the FAA will not clear it! Pilots have been complaining to the FAA and it remains grounded indefinitely.

Now, why do the police think they need a UAV toy at all? That's another story!

Yes, it might happen, but it will probably be very, very slow going and there will need to be a lot of trials before the FAA ever gives a thumbs up.
