Do Infants See Colors Differently?

Posted May 14, 2008 8:33 AM

From Scientific American:

How do we perceive a rainbow? And does everyone perceive a rainbow in the same way? These seemingly simple questions can reveal some interesting features of the human brain. For instance, is the "striped" appearance of the rainbow--the seven distinct bands of color that we see--a construct of our higher mental processes, or do the mechanics of human color vision determine it at a very early perceptual level? If your language does not have separate words for "blue" and "green" (and many languages, including Welsh, do not), do you perceive these shades as more similar than a speaker of English?

Funny this article came up now. I've been thinking about color blindness lately due to the fact that my two kids are apparently red/green color blind.

I've been wondering about what they actually see as red or green. They were raised being told that this particular color is red and this ones blue & this one is green. So they see the different color shading and know which color it is. But I've been trying to figure out a way to get a description of what they are actually seeing and can't figure out a way to do it.

I suggest you start your research here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorblind

It is rare for any individual to be completely color blind. There are three types of cones in your eyes for gathering color information. Most color blind people have a shortage of one type but not zero of that type. Incidentally the great majority of color blind are males.

I wear slightly tinted lenses to help me figure out colors. I just glance thru the lens then over them comparing the two views to decide what a color really is. It is a simple and easy way to compensate. Since I need to view color codes in electronics this has been a necessity for me.

The wiki article has old information on testing. The new tests have one trace lines in a colored dot matrix. I had the old Ishihara tests memorized. I can not beat the tracing tests.

They used both test on my kids. They said red/green color blindness is fairly common and not to worry about it, so I'm not really worried about it. Just wondering what they are seeing compared to what I'm seeing. But how do you describe color?

They aren't genetically my kids & they got the color blindness from their moms side of the family. Her Father is color blind. I've already been to the obvious goggled sites about color blindness. Have't had a chance to really dig deep.

In infants, the rods (black & white vision receptors) grow and are connected to the brain "in utero', generally a few hours after birth (for 40 month full term babies) the infant is able to perceive light and shade, but the definition is "fuzzy" until the brain synapses develop over the next 2 weeks.

Colour receptors, the cones, continue to develop, until at around 3-4 weeks after birth 9for a 40 month full term baby), the colour perception is switched on in the brain synapses.

If the black/white receptor to brain connections are not correctly made, there may be incorrect colour recognition, perhaps for life.

The processing required for full colour vision is incredibly complex , and that on it's own, precludes any possibility of "evolution".

People have a poor range of identifiable colours, so the 16.7 million colours as produced by a Computer Monitor, is gross waste of computational facilities.

The creature with the finest colour definition, is the pigeon, which is able to distinguish some 40,000 different colours.

kind Regards....
