Trash-to-ethanol firms get digging

Posted May 14, 2008 8:35 AM

From CNET News.com:

The trash-powered car may someday see the light of day.CleanTech Biofuels is developing a multistep process designed to take municipal solid waste from a transfer station and turn out ethanol on the other side. The company recently purchased the equipment and found a site in Golden, Colo., to test it using trash, as well other agricultural and forest wastes, to make ethanol.

I've believed this to be an excellent idea, for years; 'til $4/USG petrol seemed imminent, it was laughed off as jest.

We have: a perception problem! Our demand for offshore petroleum is adversely skewing our trade balance; much of the increase in cost for fuels in U.S. is the exchange rate. How much does gasoline currently cost in "$1960$"? I can rember buying fuel at $0.199/USGal then (but, $1.25/Hr wages were the norm, for us working stiffs) That's just over 6USG/hour labor; how does that work out now?

(current "good wage" in this area = ~$20/Hr; will just about purchase 6USG/Hr still; {do the math}) The exchange rate is culprit.

$1.25 was minimum wage then. Not comparable to $20.00 an hour today. Minimum wage today is about $7.25, I believe. Still, inflation is a big factor. The value of the dollar is so low that we should stop making pennies, nickels, and dimes since it costs more to make them, than they are worth. We should round everything off to 25 cents. There is precious little you can buy for less than that.

Waste of time to make ethanol from organic waste, if it is to be used in an inefficient Infernal Combustion Engine.

As far as Inflation goes, please understand that is well-planned, to impoverish the masses, and enrich the few.

Kind Regards....

Trash to ethanol or whatever makes good sense, just use the fuel to make electricity. Methane may make more sense. Waste Management Corp. uses it in big Caterpillar generators, here in Illinois. I agree on the internal combustion engine for vehicles though. We need plug in hybrids with generators on board for longer trips. I plan for my next vehicle to be a GM Volt, Prius plug in, or whatever is best for a family. Will keep the dinosaurs for use as needed. Electricity just seems to be the most handy medium for future power. Simpler than having to have a fuel cell etc.

Would like a private message on your inflation theory though. I agree, but am surprised that more is not written about it.

All the best,

Ron
