Accelerometer Cell Phones are In or Out?

Posted June 05, 2008 8:13 AM

Research firms following the MEMS market segment associated with telecommunications applications are split on whether the integration of MEMS accelerometers into mobile handsets will occur in volume numbers, as opposed to MEMS-based silicon microphones and radio-frequency (RF) switches, which have rapidly penetrated handsets. Do you own a phone with an accelerometer component? Would you be willing to pay more for its features?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from MEMS Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to MEMS Technology today.

As you have seen the I phone can change the display when the phone is turned. To recognize the vertical it makes use of a mem accelerometer!

That's why they are and will be needed.

As I understand it, accelerometers are being integrated into handsets to augment GPS capabilities. Knowing how fast, in what direction, a phone is going can increase the relative accuracy of consumer GPS. In addition, and within certain limits, it makes it possible to calculate a GPS coordinate where a GPS signal is unavailable.

I imagine it might be possible to interact with a cell phone via its accelerometer, using a Wii-like method. This is probably part of the rotating-screen function on an iPod.
