Watch HDTV on Your Cell Phone

Posted July 30, 2008 8:28 AM

University research now indicates that cell phone technology capable of projecting a high-definition television (HDTV) image may soon become reality. The scientists demonstrated a quickly vibrating silicon mirror that can scan a laser across a surface fast enough to draw high-resolution images. Would you buy a cell phone with a dime-sized, high-resolution projector?

Already too many "ham beasts" that can't pry themselves away from the television.

I guess it is possible, but the fact is that a medium designed for the big screen (approx 30 ft x 70 ft) doesn't work too well on a screen size of about 2 in x 3 in.

So I guess the question is, "Is it art?"

I'm with you. I believe that HD is possible for your phone, but would it really be worth it? Even if you have a phone where the screen is a decent size (iPhone and other touch phones), it's still pretty small.

This would probably be handy if you were waiting around for awhile. I dunno, I guess I'd rather just wait and watch tv at home. Besides, isn't waiting around the reason that some cell phones let you download (or come with) cool games like "Snake"?

If you're not familiar with the game: http://www.c4rlh.com/snake/snake.html

UM the device in question is regards to a mirror mems/laser solution that projects onto a surface (ie wall or back of a seat on and airplane) so the pixel resolution is there just a matter of distance !!!

If Nokia or Apple came out with a model that could project the HDTV signal wirelessly from my iPhone equivalent to a nicely-sized flat screen at home, I'd be interested. Large screen to enjoy HD resolution to its full potential, tiny screen on-the-road. As long at the RF wireless energy wasn't strong enough to bake my potatos, I think it would be a nice feature for a future cell phone. :) -april05
