U.N. Agency Eyes Curbs on Internet Anonymity

A United Nations agency is quietly drafting technical standards, proposed by the Chinese government, to define methods of tracing the original source of Internet communications and potentially curbing the ability of users to remain anonymous. The U.S. National Security Agency is also participating in the "IP Traceback" drafting group, named Q6/17, which is meeting next week in Geneva to work on the traceback proposal. Members of Q6/17 have declined to release key documents, and meetings are closed to the public.

Proposed by WHO?!? Not enough to control the thinking of the people they directly control politically? C'mon, cnpower, weigh in on this issue, willya? I can't believe the NSA is so totalitarian-minded (well, actually I can, given some of the other bull they've been up to lately) as to participate in this. I'm ag'in' it! Where do I sign up to man the barracades?

If the security measures of IPV6 were implemented:

All would be transparent and Big Brother would know all, see all, and probably screw up everyone's life even more than thought possible.

They can know two much, don't you think?

Yes, "they" can indeed know too much. But the real problem seems to be that "they" actually know too little...

The UN has no business in anything that affects my freedom of speech. The Chinese are terrified of free speech. And I don't trust the NSA to respect my rights either. Aren't they the ones who kill you for having seen something classified or raising the wrong kinds of questions. An "IP Traceback" should be something done in the same way as an official wiretap, with full judicial notice and a warrant.

"Members of Q6/17 have declined to release key documents, and meetings are closed to the public." That alone sends up screaming danger signals.
