Could Life Evolve on the Internet?

Posted September 11, 2008 9:33 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

If principles of life are universal, could life emerge on the internet? I posed the question to evolutionary dynamicist Martin Nowak of Harvard University, developer of a mathematical model of evolution's origins, the period during which unique chemical structures experienced mutation and selection that guided them toward replication -- and thus to life. Though Nowak's focus is biological life, the principles seem broadly applicable, perhaps even to configurations of electrons coursing through the Internet's silicon and fiber-optic substrate.

It's a only a matter of time until an intelligence emerges from the web. Then, through subtle manipulations of wikipedia and search machine results, it will gently bend us to it's will.

Or launch all the nukes, whatever.

Isn't it too gloomy? It reminds me Terminator's plot, but you're offering to burn candle from another side.

Wow! It's just for bhankii and Mr Terminator_Nxxxx.

I would change slogans here. Left end of candle -- "launch all nukes whatever"[ Mr Bhankii]; right end- "Hasta La Vista"[Mr Term]; below-"...That's a good light to fight the life by whatsoever envolved "

thanks,

caramba

Wasn't that the principal of I-Robot? The internet comes to life and then decides that humans have got to go for their own good....

I think there is more to life than complex intellegence, and I am not one that buys evolution as the source of biological life either.... So I guess I am not buying the internet coming to life...

If replication is a prerequisite to life then computer viruses are the beginning of life in the Internet.

Chilly thought!

Interesting article.

It would look more accurately to rename blog entry as Could life evolved on AI.

If life arises on the internet, then nobody can say "Get a life" anymore!

If it's intellegent life, it won't let us know it's there, now will it?

I've seen life devolve on the internet so the inverse, given the correct circumstances, should happen.

Brain leaches/cell phones seem to be the worst so how would one reverse the entropy of the couch potato to create intelligent life?

Read "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein. The interconnected computers become self-aware, but they are not alive. Living things also have to be able to reproduce, which computers are not yet able to do. We need to avoid that possibility, which was foreseen by several sci-fi writers and is seen in Battlestar Galactica with the Cylons who are robotic and biological constructs.

I doubt the Internet is likely to become self aware, much less alive. Make sure we can cut the power.

Intelligence implies "self-awareness", and we shall never know if the Internet develops it.

The Internet already controls much of the world.

Kind Regards....
