Are Wireless Valve Monitors in Your Future?

Posted October 03, 2008 8:06 AM

As the one-time comedian Tommy Smothers might say, "Wireless is taking the storm by country." It is definitely a Hot Topic in process plants around the world, mainly because a wireless sensor can be installed for about a tenth of the cost of a wired sensor. You can monitor just about anything with a wireless sensor these days. But will wireless have an impact in the valve industry? What do you think? Are you keen to install wireless valve sensors?

I would expect the valve industry to jump in with both feet, define standards and soon get most new installs fully compliant with the standards. There might be some with proprietary schemes, who want to sell their kit for big bucks, but they can only do that if they have an IP fence.

As the IP expires it will converge to a full standard

Old installations will get retrofitted in time to the new standards
