Newly Discovered Fungus Breathes Biodiesel

Posted November 06, 2008 8:51 AM

From The UberReview:

Gliocladium roseum is a microbe that "breathes diesel fuel" and could help us produce the next generation of biofuels. This reddish colored fungus was found on the inside of a tree, somewhere in the northern Patagonian rainforests. The exact location is being kept secret to prevent a gold rush scenario.? According to one of Gary Strobel, a biology professor at Montana State University: This is the only organism that has ever been shown to produce such an important combination of fuel substances. The fungus can even make these diesel compounds from cellulose, which would make it a better source of biofuel than anything we use at the moment Strobel's team was surprised to note that the composition of the gases emitted by G. roseum included an array of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives, at least eight of which are the most important constituents of diesel.

Perhaps all that waste sawdust is going to become really useful, once it is feeding these fungi.

Kind Regards....

One hesitates to use that muchly overused word "breakthrough", and of course there is also the consideration of efficiency of conversion, but this could easily be what the world has been waiting for - and yet another reason why it is SO important to conserve all that possibly can be conserved of the natural world.

The waste products that could be converted for fuel are endless - straw, paper, woodchip, bark chips, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, leaves to name but a few; liquid fuels are by far the easiest (most efficient) way to transport and store energy; and internal combustion engines (with all their faults) are still the most efficient way of converting chemical energy into mechanical work.

But as I've bleated on about before, the world must reduce energy use as much as possible - starting NOW with each of us. Don't wait for new technology DO IT NOW. Learn to drive more efficiently, turn the heating down and wear more clothes, get more insulation into your house, don't buy what you don't need. Persuade others to do the same - we're not mad, the rest of the world is mad and selfish for destroying what can never be replaced, so cannot be available for any future generation. There can be no second industrial revolution ...... I won't go on

Some species of false morel produce chemicals resembling hydrazine based rocket fuels. Some cultures consider this 'shroom a delicacy....which leads to a whole new prospect for human launch capacity....sort of.

"...exact location is being kept secret..."

Now THERE'S a good idea! Otherwise, what happened to the Pacific yew harvested for chemotherapy drugs could happen again. Fortunately, synthesizing from alternate sources has stopped most of that.

I think this is more along the lines of "renewable" than some of the other tries that have been made. I am not at all a fan of the "food for fuel" syndrome we are suffering from now. I this be something that is not consumed for food by humans and animals, lets make it fuel. I am sure this can be grown anywhere conditions are favorable and it has it's food supply , we all can have some fungus reactors in our garage filling our generators to power our homes. Is there a way we can tax this?

Just trying to support the new administration. I was thinking of "spreading the fungus"
