Promote or Not Promote — That's My Question

Posted November 16, 2008 8:41 AM

Okay, the economy is in the dumper, fuel costs are still high, and there's a lot less commercial/industrial work available to both contractors and engineers than even a year ago. According to one money-watch website, credit spending is down 10% in the past month alone. But, you have a business to run and employees to keep busy. Should you invest in an advertising campaign for your commercial and industrial HVAC contracting operation and/or engineering firm? Does it pay to invest in advertising during a time of shrinking profits? If so, what kind of solid returns can you expect? On the other hand, can you rely on word-of-mouth and stellar performance to provide your advertising?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from HVAC, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to HVAC today.

The poor economy is no reason to stop advertising, on the contrary, it is a good reason to start or upgrade your campaigns

The businesses that do the best in their fields tend to be the ones that advertise the best. This is especially true in weak economical situations. It tends to be more of a risk so those who are unwilling to manage risk do not advertise and save their pennies for a rainy day. This trend thins out the media so that those who decide based on advertising have fewer choices. My advice...make sure you're one of their choices.

I think it is important to continue to advertise during downturns in the economy in an effort to let people know you are still in the market and as an effort to "encourage" them to spend their money. ROI's can happen in the short term if competitors are not so fortunate to make it through a "recession".

The best solution is to make better marketing choices and strengthen relationships with strong and reliable clients. The companies that really do well in market down turns do not depend on advertising per se, but they do depend in part of marketing efforts, particularly those passive efforts by professional staff (word of mouth is huge) and a good performance. A marginal performance with a ton of advertising, which i have seen in some large multinational engineering corporations, leads to a lot of marketing budget and client turn overs. It is better to target market your efforts and tailor them to the clients you seek, send professionals to meet the priority clients and build relationships that last. Additionally, advertising can be a higher risk as you distribute generic information everywhere that can lead to higher risk clients and/or non-starter projects that you end up with time and resources invested in. however, it is a good time during a market downturn to grow into niche left by others who collapsed under the pressures, if you so desire, again these are specific targeted clients. One inspired, ingenious engineer or contractor with just a few meetings at a few conferences can do more than more corporations entire marketing divisions in a region.

Promoting is never an option for a business that wants to grow. It simply must be done. Though painful in slow times it is also a necessity to promote if you want to stay in business.

Nevertheless, advertising made easier through SEO among HVAC compoany websites. Besides more and more people are getting attached to world wide web so advertising is no more of great concern with regards to cost.

Interesting. I have watched the advertising rate of local businesses for years. Unfortunately being a smaller sized community word of mouth tends to over ride advertising fairly well.

I had the displeasure of working around a few local businesses that spent loads on advertising. It quickly became apparent why they did so much advertising. Every customer was a new customer. They didn't have many old ones. The quality of work was bad, the prices were outrageous and the business were typically sloppily ran and badly managed. The general mentality of the workers was 'Why bother doing a good job when know we will never see this customer again. Take the money and run!'

We do on the other hand have many small businesses that have outstanding local reputations and almost no public advertising!
