Ripples in the Aether

Posted December 08, 2008 9:14 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

Prior to Einstein, physicists believed that light waves, like water waves, were ripples in a medium: instead of the ocean, they posited the existence of the luminiferious aether, some form of substance which supported the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If that idea had been true, one would imagine there would be a unique frame of reference in which the aether was at rest, while it was moving in other frames; consequently, the speed of light would depend on one's motion through the aether.

As with so many created things, we shall probably never find out in this portion of our life how all those unknowns actually work.

Kind Regards....

Parallel to this discussion, I've never quite understood the whole clocks in space run slower than on earth.

I can understand how time may pass differently depending on the inertial frame, but I would think a watch (mechanical or electronic) would still run at the same rate regardless of inertial frame, that is, the second hand would turn at the same rate.

I have heard that when a pair of watches, one left on earth, one sent in the shuttle were compared after a space flight that the one in the shuttle lagged the one left on earth. Does this mean that the two devices continued to function the same (second hands moved at the same rate) but the shuttle just didn't travel through the same amount of time (wasn't gone as long) as we thought it was?

All very tricky....

Several years back I read a physics treatise on the theories of special and general relativity by physicist with the last name Kelly who set about to explain that the Michaelson-Morley experiments have been upgraded and now suggest that an aether does in fact exist. I will try to find a reference to the article which I located on the Internet. FYI, Mr. Kelly did reference the following speech that was given by Einstein on May 5, 1920 at the University of Leyden which I thought might be of interest:

The article I am speaking of is available in pdf format at:

Any thoughts?

Hi Aqua Doc,

I have just read the article by Einstein on the ether, the url to which you had referenced. Just goes to show exactly how broadminded Einstein was ! Really great, thanks a lot. The article gives a whole new perspective on this very important issue. We have been discussing the ether in a thread posted on the size of the photon, which you might find interesting. Here is a new view of the ether that might satisfy most of the objections raised in the article "ether and special relativity" and which obviates the need for AAD. (Action at a distance.)
