Ford’s Induction Sound Tube

Posted March 03, 2009 12:00 PM by CarDomain

See that bright green tube under the hood of the new Mustang? That's Ford's new "induction sound tube" that pipes engine noise into the passenger compartment. A recent Road & Track article on the Mustang reveals that "there is some sound-deadening material stuffed in the tube, which can be removed to enhance the noise if one chooses." So what do you think? Cool trick or silly gimmick?

Next, pipe those load exhausts into the cabin so the rest of us don't have to listen to them.

Yes, pipe that exhaust right into the passenger compartment--should be standard on any models driven by top domestic auto executives!Probably would be good idea for the financial industry as well

With ideas like this, it's hard to believe these people are going bust.

Hahahaaha, remember when we put playing cards on the forks of our bicycles with cloths pins to make that btbtbtbtbtbttbt sound? Same thing just on big boy toys.

no wonder detriot is going bankrupt, ford would not spend $8 dollars to fix the pinto and hundreds of people burned but they wasted time and money on this cr*p. Can ford build an device that can hear everyone in the country saying "we wanted electric cars 20 years ago!"

I'm working out a sound module that will replicate noises from "desireable" engines, for use with electric vehicles--just select your sound, be it throaty V8 rumble to high-strung formula1 to run-you-off-the-road cummins trucker!

Also contemplating improvements to airbag deployment systems as well

So let me get this straight, Ford has figured out a way to make it louder inside the passenger compartment to Enhance the driving experience. ------ I'd rather have a good stereo. I would also rather have a Chevy

Great Idea! Yes I am serious. Now all those idiots that want their ears destroyed can do ti without assaulting everyone else's ears with their screaming exhaust noises...

VW does this on their GTI. It's absolutely pointless. Anyone who is serious about performance would want to reduce unnecessary parts, not add them.

The current generation Mustang looks awesome. Too bad for Ford, the 2010 Mustang is a design travesty.

I can see where they are coming from, but surely it would make more sense to just wind the window down to clearly hear the engine.

Why not just put a digital synthesizer in to play the sound of a huge V8 engine, or how about a harrier jump jet on takeoff. That way we can also have the fuel economy of a practical, fuel efficient car and the noise of a performance car.

It ain't rocket science people!!

Hey I like that idea. You could set it to different sounds. V8 Roadster, Super-bike, Jet car.... HA HA! You could even add ice cream truck bells. HA!

Even simpler, instead of piping the noise through the sound deadening of the firewall, just reduce the sound deadening itself.

They've managed to build soundproof cars so good they cannot hear emergency vehicle sirens, but are now going to pipe engine noise into the cab.

Just pipe the exhaust gas direct into the car, that should weed out the idiots who think this is a good idea...

They tried a similar thing with the Pinto. It was bad for repeat sales.

Marketing image has always trumped good sense. Ford's device probably is good for their sales in the market they are trying to impress but they probably don't like people understanding their little ruse.

Do you remember the mid seventies when performance was going by the wayside and "performance cars" sprouted body accoutrement's and crazy stickers?

The "induction sound tube" reminds me of when I was a kid and borrowed my Dads pick up truck. The exhaust was to quiet, so to make some noise I turned the air filter top plate upside down. Now you could hear the noise of the intake air. The sound was a funny cross between a whoosh and a honk, but I liked it!
