Lights Out in 84 countries for Earth Hour 2009

Posted March 27, 2009 9:01 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

The lights are going down from the Great Pyramids to the Acropolis, the Eiffel Tower to Sears Tower, as more than 2,800 municipalities in 84 countries plan Saturday to mark the second worldwide Earth Hour. McDonald's will even soften the yellow glow from some Golden Arches as part of the time zone-by-time zone plan to dim nonessential lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to highlight global climate change.

Sounds like a good time for my favorite passtime, a nap. Count me in, too.

Bhankiii said "I'm going looting!".

And you responded "yup did it last year and plan to repeat this year ".

Are you saying that you turned the lights out or that you went looting?

We're 23 minutes into Earth Hour here in the Philippines. I switched off the lights but I'm still using my laptop .

My mother-in-law asked me (after I had switched off the lights), "can I still watch my favorite soap?" Sigh, okay. The thing did say just the lights, right?

Somehow, I think, I'm not doing enough. I'm going to sign off in a few minutes. The guilt is getting a little too much.

regards,

Vulcan

Its a pity they cannot think a bit more positively and leave all unnecessary lights off for ever. It might accomplish something to which they strive.

Yep,

The world of men is full of empty gestures. I suggest, to everyone that can, to switch to off-the-grid living as much as you can.

These feel good empty gestures are just what they appear; a panacea. They can even be counter-productive in that they let people think they have done something.

Yeh haw: I punched the mains off in my house prior to 8:30 and the Miss's and I went for walk around the neighbourhood.

Apartment dwellers were not even close but many houses were shut down or partly shut down. Went home, reset the mains and reset the alarm clocks, went to bed.

Next morning the Miss's complaing no coffe machine, stove out etc. Checked out the panel and one leg of 220v dissabled at the main switch! opening and closing caused a fault!

So much for Earth Hour.

Now I need a couple of hours to change out the switch and have to call the local hydro utilities to disconnect the line into the house! while I do this and then reconnect when I'm done. They will get a good chuckle out of my enviro-mental work.

I was on my laptop (on batteries) in the dark but the strain on my eyes and the battery were to much and I cheated and put the laptop on the charger and used an emergency battery light which will now have to be recharged

I was punished for the cheating because our power were of from about 1 to 5.

I just hope that they switched of the coal burning plant in the time when I had to endure all the inconvenience.

I filled my gas tank and let my 16 year old daughter drive me all over the state for an hour.

Forgot to add I should have stayed home with the lights on - I was scared. Who else out there has ridden on a highway with a 16 year old girl with a new learners permit?
