The Graduates

Posted April 18, 2009 8:48 AM

According to a recent Network World article, graduating computer science majors are still in demand, despite the massive layoffs at many U.S. Companies. Among comments received from corporate recruiters and college staffs are that the industries with the greatest need may be shifting, according to economic conditions — with the financial sector cutting back dramatically, for example.

Still, the article is focused primarily on those who might fill IT roles. What's you're take on opportunities for newly graduating students entering the industrial automation field, or other fields where data acquisition skills are required? And if you're involved in corporate recruiting, or just looking to fill a position or two in your department, what skills are most needed and what positions are proving most difficult to fill?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Oh my, students with hands-on (even project) experience with data acquisition and processing are always going to work in aviation. Flight test requires staggering amounts of data for corroboration of proper performance as well as anomaly analysis. Some will be available digital data, some will be analog to be encoded and captured.

But try to stretch beyond the obvious tools a bit - every application doesn't need or want massively expensive tool suites. It is actually pretty cheap to bring signals into the traditional ports for computers and capture them.

The best advise I can give graduating IT professionals is to acquire a foreign address in which to apply for jobs. Then, they will have a much better chance of securing a position so long as they do not mind receiving a reduced compensation for the position.
