Want Your Child to be an Engineer?

Posted May 28, 2009 7:23 AM

Children today want to be rock stars, fashion models, or sports stars. In fact, most want to be anything besides an engineer says the American Society for Quality (ASQ). How about you? Do you want your children to follow in your footsteps and become an engineer? What about becoming a valve engineer?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Valve Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Valve Technology today.

Yes. I have 2 kids (twins) Unfortunately neither of them have the overt desire but do possess the natural tendencies... It's a delicate balancing act.

My son just went into the Navy. He was accepted into a number of top schools, nuke was full, so after basic he'll be off to missile school. He did take 1st and AP physics in HS, but the AP curriculum was so watered down he didn't even get as far as my HS 1st physics class did. Let's hear it for the Department of Education -- {raspberries}

My daughter has been in college for a year now, she's working on her BFA in illustration. She's a gifted and talented artist by all subjective & objective standards. As she learns more and more about the science and technology of art, she is gradually coming closer to the deep truths of nature and the natural laws (mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, etc.).

What's a dad to do? :^)

My youngest son has expressed an interest (14) and I hope he follows on. He would then be the fourth generation of engineers in my family.

I think engineers will be a rare commodity in the future as very few people want to take on the rigors of an engineering education.
