Social Networks: An Engineer's Tool?

Posted July 27, 2009 7:24 AM

Questions that used to pop up about the Web are being posed about social networking sites. Will cyber acquaintances replace face-to-face friendships? Can Internet hookups serve to build real personal and business relationships? Are Facebook and LinkedIn fads that will fade fast, or can they become lasting tools of the engineering trade?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Motion Control Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Motion Control Components today.

Replace? No. Augment? You bet!

I use every tool in my bag and so do my customers.

Why not answer these questions for yourself? If you're on Facebook and LinkedIn, you can connect with your fellow engineers via these CR4 groups.

It takes enough time to keep up to date on CR4, without another two (or more) sites to play with ! There needs to be time to interact with those real people that one knows. Both of them

The only reason I've had time to find this thread today is that for some reason (and let me tell you I'm rather worried about this), neither the Squirrel, the Toxophilic Cat, the Groucho-Cat nor the Bouncing Furrball have been seen on here today*. Even the Railway-mad Carrot Cruncher has been quiet. This means there have been very few PMs up with which to catch and the Bath Thread has been earily silent. Of course, there are still the outstanding PMs from my absence to read....

.

* Any sightings should be reported to the Authorities AT ONCE. It's the only way to prevent the meltdown of society as we know it. Ah. Umm. Hmmm. That might not be such a bad thing in some ways....

You're too modest; CR4 is just what they are describing- cyber acquaintenaces.

We also have listserves at my employer, and between them, cr4 and facebook, in a days time , i talk more to people from other states and countries than i talk to my next door neighbors in month.

P2P not for me. The less time spent wrangling with malware the better.
