Microsoft Acknowledges Linux Threat To Windows

Posted August 05, 2009 9:26 AM

From Slashdot:

Microsoft for the first time has named Linux distributors Red Hat and Canonical as competitors to its Windows client business in its annual filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The move is an acknowledgment of the first viable competition from Linux to Microsoft's Windows client business, due mainly to the use of Linux on netbooks, which are rising in prominence as alternatives to full-sized notebooks. ... 'Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market,' Microsoft said in the filing.

I may be mistaken, but I suspect this has more to do with Microsoft telling the SEC "See? We're not a big monopoly without competition!" and less about their actual concerns with Linux.

Of course that's what he means. You know perfectly well that bits wear out. Why do you think dynamic RAM has to be refreshed all the time?

Try this: disable RAM refresh on a Vista machine and see what happens. It turns into CP/M!

M$ has long viewed Linux as a potential threat and their concerns about Linux and Open Source sometimes reaches paranoiac levels. In 1998 several Microsoft internal memoranda were leaked to the public; the so-called Halloween Papers. Since that time more internal docs have been leaked. These are summarized here. In the words of Eric S. Raymond,

"These memoranda (ie, the Halloween Papers) lay naked the assumptions of Microsoft's corporate culture — the insularity, the arrogance, the obsessive drive to control both markets and customers, the casual acceptance of FUD tactics (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt), and the perversion of what should be open standards into devices for monopoly lock-in.

More specifically, they reveal exactly how seriously Microsoft takes the threat from Linux and other open-source projects. And they reveal in detail the dirty tricks Microsoft is willing to use to stop them."

Linux has, for so many years already, gradually been eating away at Microsoft's market base. many users now are dual-booting their machines, and will eventually make the switch complete by uninstalling Windows, once they've gotten used to the OS.

the main hindrance, IMO, that first-time users encounter with Linux is the necessity of often using the Terminal (equivalent to Windows command line). otherwise, the GUI is very user-friendly and a lot more intuitive than Windows. but once you begin to understand how Linux operates and responds to commands, everything should be fine.

It doesn't matter. Pretty much most software Data-mines everything you do for advertisements, monitoring, ect.

The biggest money maker in computers right now is your data!

Glad to see Linux has gained ground but I wouldn't be suprised to find out that the whole system is geared for the same.

If I knew how to make an OS.... I would go for the $$ as well.

Later,

Steve
