Is Cloud Computing in your Future?

Posted August 11, 2009 7:40 AM

Free browser-based applications seem to be picking up in popularity. Microsoft will offer a lightweight version of Office 2010. Then there's Google Apps, the Chrome OS, and others. But some companies see only a small fraction of their workforce as being able to use such applications because of security and the need for dedicated client applications. Could you use Web-centric software in your job? Under what circumstances would it be acceptable? Would it help if it is more easily accessible via mobile devices?

This topic keeps on getting asked on the "Solutions for Industrial Computing" section. The answer every time it is asked, is NO. Not for Industrial Computing/Control.

When downtime is $50K/hr - $250K/hr, I will never, ever, ever, put all my eggs in someone else's basket.

NO. I can/will not. Too much sensitive data to have housed "somewhere" in the world. I can only imagine the competition (hires someone under the table) hacks into the server system based in India, steals all our designs/drawings etc... Just a (probably highly) remote possibility, but even a 0.01% chance of something even remotely similar to that happening is enough for me to yell NO.

Cloud computing, the dynamic data center.

Cloud computing helps to increase the speed at which applications are deployed, helping to increase the pace of innovated networked computing. Service deployed applications; Cloud computing can be provided using an enterprise data center's own servers, or it can be provided by a cloud provider that takes all of the capital risk of owning the infrastructure.

Cloud computing incorporates virtualization, data and application on-demand deployment, internet delivery of services, and open source software. Virtualization enables a dynamic data center where servers provide resources that are utilized as needed with resources changing dynamically in order to meet the needed workload.

The combination of virtual machines and virtual appliances used for server deployment objects is one of the key features of cloud computing. Additionally, company's can merge a storage cloud that provides a virtualized storage platform and is managed through an API, or Web-based interfaces for file management, and application data deployments.

Layered Service providers offering pay-by-use cloud computing solutions can be adjacent to company's equipment leases. Public clouds are run by third party service providers and applications from different customers are likely to be mixed together on the cloud's servers, storage systems, and networks. Private clouds are built for the exclusive use of one client, providing the utmost control over data, security, and quality of service. Private clouds can also be built and managed by a company's own IT administrator. Hybrid clouds combine both public and private cloud models which may be used to handle planned workload spikes, or storage clouds configuration. Dedicated audits for security policies are a must.

The benefits of deploying applications using cloud computing include reducing run time and response time, minimizing the purchasing and deployment of physical infrastructure. Considerations for Energy efficiency, flexibility, simplified systems administration, pricing based on consumption, and most of all limiting the footprint of the data center. "company's can merge a storage cloud that provides a virtualized storage platform and is managed through an API, or Web-based interfaces for file management, and application data deployments."

Not in my lifetime bud.

I want my files right here where I Manage them. I don't want anybody to even have the slightest opportunity to bribe someone (off in India where the information will most likely be stored) who manages companies sensitive data, to "leak" something.

Web based file management?? you have to be kidding me? right? This is insane, to think anyone in any information sensitive field, would allow all their proprietary information accessible from the Web, which just so happens to be where hackers live.. waiting to steal information from some schmuck who put their sensitive info on the web.

I personally (professionally) Will NEVER allow ANY (not even a single byte) of my proprietary files(which just so happens to be 99% of them) to float out in the webiverse for any decent hacker to steal and sell to the highest bidder.

Get real.

Phew... sorry.. must have pinched a nerve in my grumpy man sector somewhere. my apologies

Well... I should have clarified.. my responses are only directed for Professional/industry use.

I think Cloud Computing is great for the kids, and the gamers, and even the average home user/surfer.

Sorry, MS, SUN, Google,etc

I cannot believe that cloud computing has anything to offer.

Yes you could offer a small cost advantage but where is my data, who is responsible for it, who is guarding it from a security point of view, who is keeping the SPAMMER at bay? etc.

My own recollections of working on Company networks where the programmes and data were under central control has been quite disastrous.

I can remember one occasion in one laboratory where the whole team were working on a very important proposal.

Engineer A finsihes his, her work and presses his, her print button.

System crash.

Nobody was able to use any part of the system for many hours.

Cloud Computing is for the birds.

i think progs. like google docs, sketch it are great. for all the people that don't have cubic dollars. have you ever gotten a zip file but didn't have an unzipper? in the old days it sucked, but times are a changen. security is still an issue for industries, and proprietary stuff. but data warehouses are less likely to lose your stuff with redundant copies. and if your encryption is good no one will ever read your data.

I run a biz outa my home and do my bit of work through cloud computing ( Google documents, if you permit ) while traveling. I use virtualisation as back up for data on my hard drive and vice versa. The trick, I suppose, is to let alternate technologies complement each other instead of competing with or eliminating each other.
