I've been frustrated for a long time after getting a new
computer with Windows 8.1, but Win 8.1 was not the problem. Most of the times I
checked my Email, I would get an error message: "Proxy Server Not found." I learned how to turn the proxy server off,
but I had to do it almost every time I read my email. There was also a
suspicious incidence of the DOS-like CMD.EXE screen popping up and then going
away after a second or less. My antivirus software (free AVG) found nothing.
My son uses Linux, and for it BitDefender is free. He was
able to make a BitDefender rescue CD that I could boot up in my Windows machine
and check for viruses without my windows being active. It found Genius Box
(Adware?) and removed it. That fixed the proxy server problem, and the CMD.EXE
screen hasn't been seen since.
I got a message that Ccleaner had a new version to download.
I started to do it, but there were 4 steps, and the last one would have put
Genius Box back in. I cancelled and deleted Ccleaner entirely and downloaded it
again from SourceForge.net. It was version 3.1.x. Then I clicked on the "check
for updates" link within the program. It brought me to the same website as
before (FileHippo.com). There were 3 "buttons" to click on to download the
program. I clicked on a different one this time, and it got me version 5.05.x.
This time there was only 1 step.
I find it appalling that a link in a program would take you
to a site that can lead you astray. How do you feel about that?
