Drinking Water Toxins

05/17/2015 1:23 PM

Hi,I am trying to determine what a realistic amount of toxins , if any , are leeched into drinking water when using NSF rated PVC pipe for long runs of potable water, 2in , NSF schedule 40 , 2000ft. Also,Do the glues and solvents used to install pipe ," cure " to form a safe potable water surface ? , How would these values compare to using NSF polyethelene pipe , Thanks in advance

Good luck.

You might check the MSDS for pipe and glue.

Leach rate probably won't be published.

The NSF rating certifies that the pipe and materials used with the pipe are safe for potable water plumbing....

If you can get a big honkin' spool of 2000' of 2" PE pipe, and just roll it out with no joints, that'll beat 1000 glue jobs with PVC.

166 joints. PVC pipe comes in 12' (4m) lengths.

Agree with you on the choice of material.

2000' is along run for glued PVC pipes. PE is the normal choice for these sorts of runs.

Unless OP is wondering about internal plumbing in a building, but 2", that's riser and long distance sizing. Tall building, or small subdivisuion...

Invista raptor nylon pipe is available in 2000' rolls....Don't know if it is certified for potable water yet, but would probably work well and last longer...

Surely PE pipe is potable certified. It's used everywhere.

But PVC is also certified for potable service and also used extensively.

As long as we're discussing piping, look into ABS piping, too.

I don't think ABS handles much pressure, though.

Thanks for the links and comments , after reading, my concerns were answered. I like Tornado's suggestion about using longer rolls of PE , less labor and fewer joints . I found some 500 ft rolls that would be manageable for me to handle, Thanks again for the great info

what is THAT? coagulated algae? I agree that spools of tubing will do the job he had in mind a lot better than multiple joints over that long a run. Less leaching solvent also.

Yuk! Look what happens when fish do what they do in it!

Switch to beer instead. ;-)
