It appears you have an earth fault!

  • Fix that and it will stop tripping.
  • Get your on site electrician or engineer to trace the fault and correct it.
  • We cannot see what it is connected to so you need to diagnose it there.
  • Is this a replacement or a new installation of the relay?
  • Look for open circuits or ground loops?
  • There is just too much that could be wrong.
  • Take a picture of the relay in its cabinet and post it here. Maybe we could see the problem?

This is not the first time this type of subject has come up. I find it infinitely puzzling as to why people buy and install expensive protection relays, then the first time they trip, immediately assume the relay is doing someting wrong rather that doing EXACTLY what is expected of it!

<...what could be the reason for relay tripping...>.

Simple:

<...relay is tripping due to earth fault...>

Remove all fuses/switch off each breaker.

Replace one fuse at a time/switch on one breaker at a time, then you will see which circuit has the problem.

DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE FIRST ONE YOU FIND IS THE ONLY ONE!

Also, I cannot remember the reasons behind it now, but many years ago, in a friends house, we found that the breaker tripped when a certain "pair" of breakers were both on together.....

Also, immersion heaters and kettles are often a source of such problems, but of course only when switched on or plugged in!! Seen both over the years......

Best of luck and go and look logically......

But at least you have made a good decision to install such a breaker.

If you have ruled out everything else and concerned about the E/F element (in the relay) maloperation, it could be appropriate to suspect CT residual connections.

Considering that the protection is in 33kV feeder, it is likely that the current signal for E/F protection element is wired after summating vectorially the phase CTs (Residual connection).

If there is polarity issue of one of the CTs or if oneof the CT connections has loose terminal, the E/F protection is going to see current even when there is no fault in the feeder.

Hope this helps.
