Nothing is Free Anymore

07/27/2015 7:46 PM

This week, my county utility district hoorked me up to county water and county waste disposal, removing me from my private well and private septic system. I now have to pay for what used to be free to me. I read where California passed a law in 2009 that charges airgun users a $95 yearly permit fee to have their air bottles recharged and at a $25 fee. Air is no longer free at least for airgun users. Anyone caught trying to skirt around this by recharging with a home air compressor, can be fined $10,000. The originator of this bit of information went on to state "When will they find a way to tax sunshine". I moved from California to a state that has minimal rules and regulations, but the latest incident with the water/sewage issue makes me believe it won't stop there.

If there is a government conspiracy designed to tax each and every man, woman and child for everything possible, I'll be the first to say "I told you so". I now have to pay $35 a month to take a s***, but at least that's for multiple use.

Was this perhaps so that they could both track air guns and pay for the admin costs to do so?

Just saying.

I'm aware of the airgun laws in the rest of the world. In some states, airguns are considered weapons. Due to their power, they can cause injury and even death. The law in California was designed to treat airguns as weapons. The airgun issue was an excuse to try to eliminate all guns, powder or air by imposing restrictions on them.

Hahahahahahaahaaa, that will be the day. Canada, possibly, but a state in continental America or even California? Come on, pull the other one.

You'll see electric cars outnumber gas before this happens.

Around here they not only charge you to get rid of the doo-doo, but also charge you to put a lateral pipe in for the tune of about $10,000. Not only that you have to have a licensed plumber to disconnect the septic, install the pipe and connect it (dig the trench, lay the pipe and all that) to the sewer main. This is usually between $5,000 to $30,000 or more depending upon the length and obstructions. I won't mention those who do it themselves and have a licensed plumber sign off on the job. THAT AIN'T SH$T!

Good Luck, Old Salt.

Figure out how to give just a little bit of poop for the smallest amount of money, and deep-six the rest. This may take a little ingenuity, but you are a CR4 guy, right?

Hey ronseto,

You said: "I now have to pay for what used to be free to me."

Was your septic system totally maintenance-free? Did your well not need a pump to bring the water up from the ground and give a little water pressure? Perhaps rhetorical questions; and I'm not saying it is fair.

On the other hand: If there is a government conspiracy designed to tax each and every man, woman and child for everything possible, I'll be the first to say "I told you so". I now have to pay $35 a month to take a s***, but at least that's for multiple use.

I agree - with human nature, governments eventually become what they were designed NOT to be. We are seeing the "eventually" in our government at this time.

I used to live in a subdivision near Atlanta that was built in the late '60s to early 70s. When I moved in, in the mid-90s, all of the houses had city water, but each had their own septic field. After I'd lived there about 5 years the septic systems for the oldest houses began to fail (end of life).

At a neighborhood meeting one of the neighbors whose septic field was failing said it was going to cost him $20K+ to get the soil removed and have a whole new septic field put in. He talked to the county about the cost for connecting to the county sewer line (there was a line nearby) and was told that if enough people in the subdivision agreed, the county could extend the line and connect each house to it for around $5K.

I ended up moving before my system had any problems. But clearly in the long run, connecting to the county sewer line was going to be the cheaper way to go, and better for the environment.

So keep in mind that it might cost more now but in the long run it could end up being a lot cheaper.
