First We Need to Learn to Tie Our Shoes and Play Nice

08/12/2015 12:30 AM

Recently, in an uncharacteristically insightful moment, Senator Diane Feinstein said, "Without common sense rules, I believe it's only a matter of time before there's a tragic accident," when speaking about drones and the idiots who fly them into the sky in restricted airspace.

Drone Close Encounters Surge as Lawmakers Demand Tighter Rules

Unfortunately, there has been no common sense displayed in Congress in about 30 years.

To paraphrase:

"We the unknowing, led by deep pockets, are doing nothing for the voters. We have done so much for ourselves, and so little for the unwashed masses for so long, we are now qualified to do nothing for anyone who cannot pay."

So, the prospect of any meaningful legislation coming from them is non-existent.

Politicians, bribed influenced by business special interests and their minions who sell drones, will put aside common sense in favor of money slipped into collective pockets of our "leaders".

What practical engineering solutions can help self-police this obvious threat? (geo-fences don't count/drones with guns don't count)

First and foremost we need to get all the politicians in front of a ramp and jump 'em with a bulldozer.

Secondly we need to have transponders on these drones so at least we can find out which idiot it belongs too.

Third we need to promote Darwinism, stop put silly labels on things that help eliminate stupid people like on a methanol can that says DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY! and CANNOT BE MADE NON POISONOUS!

Fourth start shooting them down, I find that a shotgun blast will usually render a drone quite unflyable.

JMHO

So much for playing nice huh?

Shotguns aren't very popular around airports in urban areas either.

I notice you didn't disagree with the rest of my comments I find that strangely satisfying.

Not true.

The annual national championship trap competition was held 82 years just outside the Dayton International Airport.

The Grand American Trapshooting Championships has since moved to Sparta, Ill., but had been at the Dayton Airport since 1924.

How far outside the airport?

Trap shooting is a 'low altitude' sport, it probably does not reach to the second layer of the airports 'inverted layer cake' of controlled airspace. I would also suspect that the shooting range was set to the shotguns were pointed AWAY from the airport.

When I was a kid, my Scout Troop would go to Camp Ft. Dearborn, just a couple of miles from O'Hare International Airport, for our Rocketry Outings. These rockets, most of which were Estes kits (only a couple of the 'almost ready to age out of the troop' scouts would try their hand at the larger rockets, but never anything using bigger than the standard range of Estes rocket engines), could not get high enough to interfere with airport operations, or even be noticed by the airport's radar. We were specifically, repeatedly, and sternly warned by the adult leaders against putting shredded aluminum in as a payload, since that, once thrown into the air by the rocket's ejection charge would 'mess with the airport radar.' (The adults never went into detail, but we had an idea what would happen, the resulting cloud of 'chaff' would look like a plane that had been flying under the radar pulling up into the radar field as it exploded. Not the sort of prank you want to pull on highly-stressed air traffic controllers; those guys are wound up so tight the shock might cause them to spontaneously explode like Hollywood 'blood bags' as the internal tension overwhelms their skeletal strength.) (Goofy Halloween gore-fest aside, those guys DO have incredibly high-stress jobs, and don't need any more stress dumped onto them.)

Most hobbyist drones use a select set of channels around 2.4 GHz.

I'm wondering if a perimeter of jammer antennae could be set up perhaps a mile outside the takeoff/landing pattern to discourage people from flying their drones there. That, coupled with heavy fines and jail time for anyone caught flying a drone in commercial airspace, might reduce the danger.

Jamming any RF signal violates a host of international laws. Good luck with that one.

Under very limited circumstances.

The idea of trying to jam an airfield, where RF communications and avionics are a must, is a nightmare. The cure may be far worse than the problem.

Just what frequencies would you propose to jam? The RF spectrum is a wide field and you can't jam the whole spectrum just to prevent a few loose cannons.

You jam one frequency and people will just find another.

Let Congress handle it. they'll come up with some swell laws that will keep the people with good intentions from ever buying a drone, let alone fly one, but allow the terrorists or criminally insane a very nice loop hole so they can use one to take down planes. Guaranteed.

We have "engineering solutions" (gun locks, cabinets, etc) to help "self-police" people with guns ...how's that working for us? Until the people with the drones get some idea of what "responsibility" means, this will continue to be a problem. You can't fix stupid!

There are still many people who believe in being responsible. The problem is that there are too many people who are not and have no desire to be. And many of the "entitled" have learned that they get more if they're the loudest complainers.

We've all seen the Gen Xer's, Gen Yer's and Millenials, being spoiled by their parents. Their parents were trying to give them a "better" childhood than they had, but they just created a generation who has an air of entitlement. I do believe that many of these parents did pass down some good values and morals, so we just need to be patient and have faith that they will become productive citizens in due time. I think they'll wind up surprising us!

The part that worries me is the group whose parents who did not teach them good values and morals. Since this group has grown substantially (in size) over the last 25 years, they may soon be the majority in our country, if they're not already. They'll have the power to elect even worse government representatives (yes, it's possible) and all a candidate will need to do is to promise more food stamps, more section 8 housing, more welfare programs, more giveaways, etc. When this happens, the middle class, being the minority, won't be able to do anything about it.

What can we do? I don't think it's too late yet. I think we should do as much as we can to teach kids in our community to be both respectful and responsible. It's pretty easy, all you need to do is volunteer in your community. You could help tutor kids after school, coach kids sports, run for town council, run for a position on your school board, volunteer at events, etc. I think it's our job to do what we can, while there's still a chance.

Think about the details concerning "Drones" and the fact that there are Flying fields dedicated to model aircraft enthusiasts (at least in the county forest preserves where I live), with regulations such as requirement for insurance, so on and so forth.

There are probably a number of engineering solutions, but responsibility would have to come first.

Consider car commercials where "Horsepower" is back in the picture.

Consider motorcycles with 100+ horsepower.

Horsepower is legal.

Flying in restricted airspace without authorization is not.

Yes, responsible operators are not the problem.

We went to the moon with slide rules and drafting tables, maybe there's a solution to this dilemma.

Horsepower is legal, abuse of it is not.

Drones are easy to fly, even for those with Velcro instead of shoelaces.

Playing "nice" is open to interpretation.

I see some sort of device, much like the one that allows operation of a car after passing a breathalyzer test, modified as a flawed thought process detector.

Maybe we could round up all the slide rules and then throw them (one at a time) at the drones.

Maybe we could make a drone that shoots the slide rules at other drones?

The engineering solution I prose is this: build a very large containment vessel with a single entrance door lockable from the outside only. Usher all the politicians and their influences/buyers inside, then shut and lock the door. Maybe even weld it shut and destroy the key.

Hey! I have an idea that fits right into today's thought pattern especially the thought pattern of our politicians.

How about every city and town throughout the USA build a very large waterfowl breeding facility and then start releasing extremely large quantities of fowl into the local air space?

This would eventually flood the skies with enough fowl to prevent drone flights or at least make them very costly.

It would be a twofold, win-win endeavor as we would also be helping to meet one of the environmental fowl restoration goals.

Of course commercial and private aircraft flight also would be extremely limited or not at all but what the heck, people don't count in today's ECO friendly world anyway.

MRDUCKS. MRNOT. MR2

Hell,

They make all the drones so why not build a drone killer.

Shoot down a drone and now they need another one.

Repeat business. Good thinking!
