Laptop Speakers

11/05/2015 10:02 AM

Can I adapt a pair of stereo speakers to use on a laptop or PC? If so, How?

Don't know wheither the output from a laptop or PC would have the power to drive stereo speakers. You can get a wye adapter to connect to your stereo amplifyer.

It depends on the speakers, laptop and your your skills with electronics.

Most self powered speakers are designed to be easily driven from a laptop with a headphone level output. The extremely efficient Klipsch La Scala II speakers may be adequately driven directly from a headphone output.

You don't differentiate between 'stereo speakers' and 'stereo sound', two different animals...the speakers can be adapted by using adapter connections, from what exists on the speakers in the way of connections and what output you have with you computer...these vary considerably....I just use a portable mini speaker which works well for my laptop and phone, and a 60 watt amplified stereo setup on my pc...

I had the same problem...without the wattage to drive the speakers you need amplification....the mini portable rechargeable ones I have work great...you just need one, I tried 2 but one works just as well...They work with any mini plug, and recharge from any usb...Big sound from such little speakers...and only ~$15.

Generally speaking, the "better" a loudspeaker is, the less efficient it is. Never forget this.

Conversely, cheap, inefficient (crap) speakers may actually give more volume.....

This means that generally, what you are intending to do, assuming impedances actually match (unlikely!), will actually reduce the max volume achieved.

Furthermore, laptops are usually designed for loudspeakers of around 35 Ohms impedance (in my experience, but do check the technical manual first!). Piezo speakers MIGHT do what you want, but no guarantee....

Most average "good" speakers are either 4 or 8 Ohms. So usually there will be a serious mismatch to your laptop if you try to use such speakers....

For such cases there are cheap (and expensive!) PC amplifiers around to boost the signal for a better pair of speakers. Some are USB connected, which also allows some power to be used from the Laptop/PC to boost volume.

If you are after just reasonable quality but louder sound, then that is an easy way to go without risking damage to your PC/Laptop.

There are many simple and small USB adapters (probably need a driver) around on ebay, that would allow Laptop connection to a normal HiFi system, for very little money. Probably a longer cable will also be required.

There are many ways to do what you want, but DIY ideas, with little practical knowledge on your part it would seem, can often result in damage, or at best, the result can be well below your expectations.

As you do not give a clue as to your location on this planet (thats usually Americans I find!), I cannot be more helpful that I have been.

Simply give yourself an early Christmas present!

Nor is it a grammar checker. "Can I..." refers to ability, "May I..." seeks permission. You receive a grade of 50 for getting it half right...or is it half wrong...? Of course many of the answers here are half-a$$ed...

Where is your sense of adventure???? Simple audio circuits tend to be tough to damage these days. Find an amplifying source and give it a go. I got started on the road to being a EE by experimenting with a low cost monaural 3" reel tape deck and an old radio. (a bit dangerous then, because the amplifier in the radio was the tube type and ran on 120VAC - these days everything is low volts DC) Then I upped the fun by trying to use my parents Hi-Fi, and so on. They finally bought me a cheap 45 RPM record player/stereo, and then I really got things amplified. By the time I was a senior in high school, I had a loud speaker under my 54 Chevy's hood and could whistle at girls as I drove by, and had stereo and a CB in it as well. None of these were stock items built for that use, but all jerry rigged parts from much simpler cheaper items I could find for as little money as possible.

So go buy an old stereo amplifier at a yard sale (I got 3 my wife wants to sell, but I won't let her - too useful as amplifiers) and get busy making things loud. Most ear phone outputs work quite well as pre-amped sources. Heck, you could even find old car audio amps that could be jerry rigged to work. I've done that trick before.

Why knock yourself out, just buy a Bluetooth portable speaker or two (some are stereo), the sound is pretty good to excellent, and they can be had for around $15 and up.

I done with a couple laptops and desktops and stereos. The stereo has to have aux inputs. I put built a patch cord out of either cord using a mini stereo plug and a couple RCA plugs I had laying round. You get all the supplies at Radio Shack or any other electronics supply store for cheap. And wire accordingly.
