50hz to 60 hz

11/21/2015 4:52 PM

I imported a 220 v Bosch washing machine to Antigua from UK. It is 50hz and apparently the island is 60 hz My machine stopped working mid cycle. Is there any hope for it?

Well, it probably is repairable. Either the power supply or a motor gave up the ghost.

Obviously you either need to convert it to 60Hz (if that is even possible) or replace the whole thing.

Look into what can be done to convert it to 60Hz.

Running at 60 Hz, the 50 Hz timer may have assumed that the cycle was finished before it really was.

Did you try resetting the machine? Unplugging it for 10 Minutes, then re-plugging it?

You should contact someone from Bosch with at least the model number of this appliance.

On second thought, I think I can see your problem from here.

It's been my experience that when a washing machine breaks down that you can save time, trouble and money, by just getting a new one...

Imported? It would have been cheaper to buy one locally, which is what you need to do now as the imported one is knackered. Learn from the experience, and write it off.

Don't necessarily despair. If there is a thermal overload reset on the motor, the motor may be able to run again. However, you should reduce the motor shaft pulley to 5/6 of its present pitch diameter to keep the tub from turning too fast. The time cycles on the machine may also run too fast, but that could be compensated by setting them 1.2 times as long, if the machine accommodates that. The water pump (for drainage) might also tend to overload, but it typically runs for only a short time.

I would not expect a modern washing machine to worry much about frequency....but earlier models were very sensitive......Too much voltage could cause problems, but that should not be the case here....

By the way, did you use a 2 pin plug or a 3 pin plug? All the washing machines I have ever seen, need a 3 pin with a good earth connection, to keep things safe for both the user and the electronics.....

Also, some machines (I am told) are sensitive to where the neutral and the phase are applied, with many 2 pin plugs, its just luck which way round they are......check the colours in the cable.

But a 3 pin plug is the proper answer, with correct connection orientation for each pin.

Powering off for half an hour with the machine unplugged, is good advice that someone has already given here....but it may be simply too late for this machine.....its broke!!!

Best of luck.

Why don't you just google the washer's model number and see what the manual says?

If you had bothered to include that in your OP someone would have told you by now.

I think they came to us looking for permission to junk the washer. That's why they did not mention a model number. This may not have been a conscious omission but they want a new washer.

I still don't understand why people ship appliances to other countries, even when the shipping is free. The appliance is only valuable where it was designed to work. Sell the appliance where it is valuable and buy another one for the new residence. People don't take their toilets with them when they move. Well sometimes they do when they are trying to give somebody grief.

So, this is one of those, "My Citation won't start. What could be wrong with it. Should it need new wipers?"

I just heard a news story about people who are so enamoured over their new high tech toilets that they are willing to suffer for hours rather than use a different one, and when they move, they are taking their toilets with them now! These are the new kind that have a built in bidet-like cleaning system with a warm air drier, along with odor control and noise canceling technology, as in YOUR noises!

What have we come to...

A modern sophisticated toilet is a possession to be admired, it's the earmark of a civilized society....Washing one's bum as opposed to scraping it with bark, no matter how finely ground, is a much more pleasant and effective solution....

This much activity on my side comment tells me that I've touched an engineering nerve.

It has the same hope as a Chevy Cavalier, judging by comments in this forum.
