Yes it is braille, and it says alcohol, or possibly Kirin Beer, or possibly sake...depending on what exactly it is....

"Because of a genetic difference, many Asians are susceptible to "alcohol flush reaction," an allergic reaction brought on because their bodies can't metabolize alcohol as easily as most people. While not fatal, it can be uncomfortable, causing redness in the face, neck and shoulders and, in some cases, nausea, dizziness, headaches and even the swelling and itching of body parts.

To help blind people differentiate between cans of beer and other canned beverages, many Japanese companies have started printing short words in Braille such as "alcohol," "beer," or, in the case of one marketing-savvy brewery, "Kirin," on the tops of cans. For those who lack the enzyme to metabolize alcohol, the Braille serves as a helpful deterrent to an evening of discomfort. For those who can enjoy beer without those nasty side effects, the Braille labeling can help assure the visually impaired purchaser that he or she won't be stuck with soda, coffee or tea when only beer will quench their thirst."

Hi Sid,

Did you use the icon, or did you just try copy and paste? There seems to be problems with this in every browser. Mine is working fine now, but I have had problems in the past.

That's to help you find another beer in the fridge after you're blind, stinkin' drunk.

Is everyone now getting to where they know SolarEagle will just come in and cover for them?

Feel it man - if you pay attention you can actually feel the small bumps.

Well I for one think that the Braille imprinting on cans for blind people makes way more sense than the Braille printing on a number of my vehicles steering wheel controls does.

Makes all kinds of sense to me.
"Steering wheel controls let you operate the audio system and your Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled devices - all without taking your eyes off the road."

Yea but how many non blind people who have valid drivers licences can read braille?

I learned to use all my vehicle buttons based on memorized location not what the braille print says.

It's not braille.

It's bumps for the less intelligent driver.

Are you SURE they're Braille, or just a bump. On the left-hand side of the steering wheel, my car, from top to bottom has:

  • Cruise control enable - bump near the left edge of the button
  • Set/incrementally increase speed setpoint - no bump near the left edge of the button
  • Incrementally decrease speed setpoint - bump near the left edge of the button

This is to aid in identifying what the button is without having to look at it. It's not Braille.

So technically not braille per se, just bumps to locate buttons....

Fair enough. I can't read Braille so I just assumed that being each button had a different pattern of bumps for each button it was Braille text.

Or the one I like is the sign at the fast-food drive-thru stating Braille menu available upon request.

How about the sign that reads "no animals allowed except service dogs" I didn't know seeing eye dogs could read signs.

So that when you get "batman" drunk you can figure out which end to try opening?
