Collision of gas particles from Earth and charged particles from the sun.

Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis Explained

Variations in colour are due to the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Nitrogen produces blue or purplish-red aurora.

It amazes me that the Aurora shown is 100Km up. It looks so close to the ground. Must be the large moon effect. No, i'm not going to give you a link. insert emoticon of your choice as i still can't get them to work. Firefox, win8.1.

Oh, come on - it was supposed to be an "effin" joke.

Lighten up, it's a new year!

BTW, I appreciate your "what's this" posts. With the paucity of coherent/intelligent/challenging Questions or Discussion starters, they are quite welcome.

Good morning Fredski, because my #2 and #4 was posted publicly, I feel I should publicly apologize for those two comments. I meant no insult towards you at all. I feel the same as Mikerho stated in his #10, "BTW, I appreciate your "what's this" posts. With the paucity of coherent/intelligent/challenging Questions or Discussion starters, they are quite welcome." I'm sure everybody else feels the same that here on CR4

I know I should have done this sooner, but my mother's memorial service was Sat. Jan. 2 and I had to deal with that and still am. She succumbed her 17yr battle with cancer on Dec. 20th so the last few weeks has been hell and was hoping for a joking chuckle and to wish you and everyone else on CR4, A Happy Year.

So, again, I do apologize.

Dan

Been there, it is a tough thing to go through. Last year we buried my niece's daughter (who lived to her 40's, not too bad for CF), then this year the father of that child, a dear friend and compatriot passed away, not sure if it wasn't a broken heart, although that was not the diagnosis.

I dropped by rose colored glasses and switched to ...these below.
From my perspective, the answer to "why is this green?" should be
quite clear, particularly having sampled the contents.

To add an interesting twist to the discussion...

I live near the Arctic Circle and see the aurora very often. I, and others, swear they can hear them as well as see them, mind you, not all the time can I hear them.

As a side bit... I suffer from a mild case of tinnitus in my right ear, and when I can hear the arurora... my tinnitus appears to flare as well.

Think of a colour organ from the disco era where the colour organ controlled coloured lights in time with the sound levels and frequencies of the music. What I seem to hear matches the effect.

No... I am not crazy.

Re: Why is this Green?

I believe you. I have seen 'stars' as a result of a bump on the head. The lights disappeared immediately, but the pain lingered.

I recall a TV documentary of many years ago, when the person being interviewed was someone who could 'see' sounds and 'hear' colours, - that started when recovering from a head injury where (it was thought) the optic and aural nerves were somehow damaged and 'leaked' into each other. The woman did not see pictures or images as such. Much like your disco lights I guess. - just a general colouration and brightness depending on the source of 'noise'.

I suffer from a mild form of tinnitus (a hiss) which I have often wondered might be picking up static radio signals, much the the same as white noise you see on analogue TV screens or a hiss on radio when there is no signal.

Yup... I know well the "hiss" you refer to.

When I hear the aurora... the hiss appears to match the visual input from the aurora.

Re: Why is this Green?

Interesting. Does that mean you don't hear the hiss of the aurora if you face the other way - or shut your eyes.

In my case the hiss gets louder if I shut my eyes. Although perhaps it seems louder because there are no visual distractions. But I am also aware of a rhythmic tune as well - a sort of humming- with a beat and tempo that I can fit words of many songs to.

Luckily it is not intrusive - yet - but it is there.

I have to see the aurora to recognize the patterns in the hiss... perhaps it is my pathology that causes it.

Green is the most common color but it can go from almost a yellow to pinkish purple also. Dependent partly on ambient city lights which will wash out most color except the green. Try watching it out of town around 60 miles, coloring can be phenominal.

Maybe the camera lacks the same color sensitivity as the human eye, especially at red wavelengths. OR maybe the aurora was lower in the sky this time due to differences in solar wind velocity/energy.

I really appreciate the thoughts and condolences. The only reason I mention my mother's passing is an explanation as to why I didn't apologize to Fred sooner. Also, I didn't mean to derail his thread. I also meant to make my post #26 as OT, as it has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

For a natural phenomenon, the Auroras are absolutely stunning. In all the years I've worked in aviation, they are something I missed out on seeing.
