Vision and Hearing Damage

01/14/2016 10:14 AM

I just read a report that a car will emit a burst of "pink noise" just before an eminent car crash to protect the occupants hearing.

I grew up listening to excessively loud music, looking at the sun, involved in car accidents, welding without a mask at times, looking at lazers, screaming with siblings into ears etc...

My hearing and vision are top notch. So I have to wonder how much damage is heredity and how much is induced.

I used to dj and blow up fireworks simultaneously. No joke. Worse yet I would eat then swim directly afterwards.

I wasn't a rebel without a clue. It was just a time where an abundance of caution didn't exist.

"Pink noise" is it just a bunch of noise?

No, no. Not pink noise, it's Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Cruel World" that you hear.

.

.

Pink noise is a sleep aid, but I've never heard of a car emitting it.??

The noise is that from the tyres proceeding along the road when the friction from the brakes is so high as to stop the wheels from turning.

Isn't the common term for that called a "skid"?

"The 2016 E-Class with Pre-Safe will take advantage of that reflex for more protection. If the car's sensors determine that a crash is imminent and unavoidable, it will emit "pink noise" just before the actual, and likely very loud, crash. The pink noise is described as being similar to a waterfall or the rush of traffic. A short burst of pink noise is enough to trigger the stapedius reflex, as it's known, and cause the middle ear to contract. Then when the crash occurs milliseconds later, there's ideally less damage done to your hearing."

Haha maybe it's a German thing....

auf Wiedersehen!!

Oh, look. That's interesting. Almost as many question marks as Andy's exclamation marks. Changes at the top at LynDoorTM, methinks.

ooh...ooh! Let me do the dialog...!

He'd be like:

Andy: "...why am I Mr. Pink?"

Lyn: response omitted for politically correct gender-type sensitivities

Mr Blonde laughs

Andy: "Why can't we pick our own colors?"

Lyn: "No way...no way...tried it once and it doesn't work. We got four guys all fighting over who's goin' to be Mr. Black. They don't know each other so nobody wants to back down. No way...I PICK...you're Mr. Pink.

Be thankful you're not Mr. Yellow."

Mr. Brown: Yeah, yeah but...Mr. Brown...isn't that a little too close to Mr. Sh*t?"

Mr. Pink: "Mr. Pink sounds like Mr. Pussy. How about if I'm Mr. Purple? That sounds good to me. I'll be Mr. Purple."

Lyn: "you're not Mr. Purple. Some other guy on some other job is Mr. Purple. You're Mr. Pink!"

...

...Let's Go To Work!

Very unlikely, only death will cancel me out

Or maybe not? I might come back as a poltergeist and really make your life even worse than it obviously is now..... Going by your general demeanor here!!

Recently I looked back at some of your unmannerly and unfriendly comments you have directed at me over quite a time span. (I found some directed at others as well for no obvious reason that I could see!

(Do you keep a "Blacklist?)

You obviously qualify as at best, a medium Sociopath (I assume that you haven't actually killed anyone up to now that is, then that person is known as a Psychopath!!)

sociopathˈsəʊsɪə(ʊ)paθ,ˈsəʊʃɪə(ʊ)-/noun

  1. a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behaviour.

Now if I cannot change you by asking you, (remember, its absolutely pointless to "ask" a Socio- or Psychopath to change as ANYONE with a modicum of knowledge will know!), then I do believe I must start a Blog here explaining how anyone can "out" such people.

No names no pack drill!! General subject matter only.

My "greatest" worry is only "where" on CR4 it will be placed best.....as I do find that as such people compose approximately 1% of the population, everyone else here needs to be warned....

As a start, I recently found a really interesting website that many here may find interesting (But not you Lynn!!):-

online-trolls-are-psychopaths-and-sadists-psychologists-claim

This is also a really interesting TV program from Channel 4 UK, first broadcast around 2 years ago, that having Psychiatry as a "hobby" for many years, I personally found really interesting and informative....enjoy:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmL0zGnW9r0

I do not start aggressive comments to you Lynn, I just posted a LOL!! to you before finding this further aggressive comment, but I do finish them (to the amusement of many here!!)

What I find REALLY fascinating, is the way that such affected people basically simply "out" themselves (they do not see it that way of course!), in aggressive insults of some form or another, often WAY OTT for the situation.

Would the "Cap fit" you Lynn?

We must not forget that such "-paths" are needed in this world, especially in armies, as they have little worry about ever being shot or blown up, as they believe they are invincible at all times. Many are decorated for bravery.

Without them, wars might have taken different directions, who knows. The Vikings had a special name for them of "Berserker", they were sent in first to get the opponents really worried!!!

Online Dictionary:-

berserkerbəˈsəːkə/noun

  1. an ancient Norse warrior who fought with wild or uncontrolled ferocity.

As there are several others here obviously "OUTING" themselves in a similar manner, maybe I should simply "Go for it" and see who "OUTS" themselves when it appears!!
What say you all?

Or maybe you'll haunt the CR4 Forum in general and become our zeitgeist.

While were on the subject, a while back, on another forum, I was talking with someone about how the new house in the newly-built subdivision was affecting his parents after they moved in, that they were becoming somewhat lethargic and 'dull.' I used the term platzgeist to describe how the 'spirit of the place,' the bare, beige walls and mostly-empty rooms, were affecting his parents on a subconscious level, and suggested that they finish unpacking and start redecorating; make the house look less like a 'model house' and more like a 'lived-in home.' My question to you is this: Is platzgeist a real word, did I coin a new phrase, or was I speaking gibberish?

I would not want to bother the majority here, only a special "few". They know who they are, always rude and showing everyone how they were "dragged" up!!! 'nuff said!!

Good attempt for your word, though my best guess is Gibberish, as I don't know the whole German dictionary off by heart!.

I've certainly never heard it before, but that is no guarantee either way..... Sorry!!

If its really important for you, look it up on an online Dictionary!!

"Platz" has several translations, even "Geist" has a few as well......anyway, I want to be a "Poltergeist", as I said before, screwing around with the heads of the "unwashed" here!!

I believe it's the repetitive noise that does the damage, say the hum in the engine room of a ship and the like.

Low frequency, repetitive noise is what damages your hearing.

Higher amplitudes=more damage.

This maybe what your refering to

http://www.popsci.com/sound-safety-in-2016-mercedes-e-class

We all did those crazy things as kids. We can't go back and undo them to see how much better our senses would be. Some of the damage your body can repair. More so when the body is young.

You and your sibling still yell in each others ear?

Your comment reminds me of a few jokes, one in particular comes to mind:-

Middle aged man comes into a doctors surgery.

"What is your problem Mr Smith?" asks the doctor.

"Over a long period of time, my farts do not smell and sadly, they are always silent ones, can you help me?"

"Of course!" says the doctor. "Take this medicine for one week then come back".

After one week, Mr Smith returns and smilingly says to the doctor, "I can now hear them, fantastic work doctor!"

"Great, that has fixed your hearing!" says the doctor.

"Now I need you to use these nose drops to get your sense of smell back!"

Wait, that has:

Yeah, one ounce of that will drop you faster than chugging half a bottle of NyQuil.

Pink noise is a noise, produced by a pink noise generator or source.

It is used for acoustical audio tests.

All frequencies and harmonics are in there with the same energy content.

We used to use this to equalize our P.A. systems for Rock events before the sound check with the performers.

It might help for leaving this life with a smile (better even combined with CO2 sufucation) - produces laughing, relaxed facial impressions.

"All frequencies and harmonics are in there with the same energy content."

No! That's white noise.

"Pink noise or 1f noise is a signal or process with a frequency spectrum such that the power spectral density (energy or power per Hz) is inversely proportional to the frequency of the signal. In pink noise, each octave (halving/doubling in frequency) carries an equal amount of noise power." (first entry in Google search)

You are right about the octave explication.

However the noise generated in the wiki sample is no pink noise. Pink noise is very dynamic and weighted specifically to our ears' sensitivity.
