Pad Mounted Containment

04/08/2016 2:31 PM

How do you go about sizing a containment area required for two transformers each have 750 gallon capacity of oil? Please provide standard references if possible (IEEE, NEC, etc).

Thanks

I search for the proper documentation if I don't know how to do it.

I would not ask an anonymous forum to do my work for me.

How do you do it?

Your response provides no direction or solutions. I have searched for documentation...I was not able to find a process to determine this....that is why I am asking the question. This issue is also time critical.....another reason why I am reaching out to this forum. If I have done so incorrectly, then I will try other forums.

Quoting the OP here, from a 2007 post he said, "I am a registered PE in United States".
That statement.....................................leaves me speechless.

Perhaps he is asking a question about an area he is not an expert in.

No guidance is not surprising these days. Many companies are tight on resources. Since the recession, there have been a lot of layoffs and loss of jobs through attrition. Many of us are now doing other people's jobs in addition to our own, without training. It's not an ideal situation. But I don't blame someone for asking for help on a user discussion forum. I certainly wish I could sometimes.

How hard did you really search?

http://ecmweb.com/content/knowing-liquid-filled-transformer-installation-requirements

you have to keep looking because halfway through....

"but does not include facilities such as pad-mounted equipment and installations in manholes and vaults.""

Lacking knowledge of local regulations, one might design the net volume of the containment to be, say, 20% more than the total volume of oil in the transformers. Design the perimeter of the containment so no transformer projections overhang it.

Consider what to do about precipitation that might partly fill the containment.

Well, it would have to contain at least 1500 gallons. Add, say, 10% extra for luck. Add a bit more to cater for rainwater...

Check the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. Most local governments adopt the applicable NFPA codes although sometimes they go with stricter particulars, so check local code enforcement agencies also.

Go to the USDA's Rural Development web site (link below) and download their Bulletin 1724E-302 "Oil Plill Prevention & Control." That should give you some pointers and references. Other good documents there as well, including their "Design Guide for Rural Substations."
