Enforcing a Steam Heater Jacket

06/19/2016 12:43 PM

What would be the best solution to make a steam jacket burst-proof ? The steam jacket would heat a mixer made of steel, 6mm thickness. The steam pressure would be less than 5 bars. The jacket is 70 mm wide with the outer plate also 6 mm.in thickness.

The best solution is to run the design past your insurance company before you buy anything with which to make it. I mean, you do want a design that is capable of being insured, don't you? I don't know the significance of 5 bars, after all, too many people have been killed at 5psi - especially when it is propelling a cast iron manhole cover in their direction.

Install a pressure relief valve, vented to a safe exterior location.

Thanks, we need to use an existing mixer and heat it with steam. The jacket is all but empty inside.I would like it to be made burst proof in some way.Maybe some steel bars welded horizontally both to the body and the outer cover?

Maybe, instead of guessing, you all need to have your design checked by some body that can give you all the assurance that it is insurable. After all, if you all heated it electrically, you wouldn't all be worrying about it. You are all behaving irresponsibly at the moment.

That would be a really hokey "solution"; just get the jacket designed right in the first place. At only 70 mm wide, you may not have to do anything.

Stop NOW!

What you propose is a deadly, hazard!!

Get it done properly.

You have come here before asking for cheap fixes instead of doing a job properly! Quit it!

A pressure relief valve.

Not the first time, wouldn't be the last.

I have a tendency of reading through and when I have something to say, post it before forgetting, then finish reading the rest of the posts.

Okay - it has been said at least twice before - be SURE you understand this - we build ASME code rated tanks with heat jackets for steam here where I work, so I know where of I speak - a pressure relief valve is necessary to protect that jacket from bursting - reinforcement only makes it able to burst a a more deadly pressure.

Check your local codes. Where I am, anything over 15psi steam requires an ASME code stamp, periodic test and inspection and certified welding. You may want to take an easier way out and get tube rated for the pressure and do multiple wraps around the mixer bowl. Then you are into off the shelf fittings that will come already rated.

The local bureaucrats are likely to be a greater hurdle than the technical side.
