Technician or Engineer?

08/12/2016 6:03 AM

I came across now the thread of 24/10/2014 and I am very disturbed when I read what I wrote in there.

First of all I have to apologize for my-very bad- joke around the name "brich" and I am deeply sorry now if I hurt him in any way.

After about 2 years I saw many of threads in which he participated and I have to say his answers are valuable indeed.

Second, I have to recognize, 10 years ago- my retire date- from up to now my contact with practical world is reduced and my knowledge-even newly acquainted- are theoretically only.

I my time, a technician job was to interpret well an instruction-text or drawing or both-and the engineer job was to make the instructions. I was educated so that I have to treat a job which I never encounter before and nobody will came along to save me.

In these days an engineer needs more practice then theory so the line between an engineer capability and an experimented technician knowledge it is not so clear.

If an engineer has only the authority-that means the right- to sign the papers-I think it is not what has to be expected from him.

I met once, when I was younger, of course, an engineer in a very respectful design institute, authorized to sign the technical papers produced by this institute in almost all countries around USA. I got a very hot advice to keep distance from him since about 80% of his knowledge is useless or even wrong.

So this will be in the future what we’ll expect?

I've worked with engineers with a wide range in the competency spectrum, equally as well as technicians. And the best technician can fill the responsibility of and engineering with projects that proform.

After I graduated from college, I soon realized and saw the differenced between theoretical and practical engineering.

Never had much success in industry with theoretical engineers, I feel they can remain in teaching, (though in school, I gained more value from practical instructors.)

It takes both theoretical and practical knowledge, theoretical knowledge to understand what is going on and practical knowledge to know what can be accomplished.

"So this will be in the future what we’ll expect?"

I think it is already here, to some degree, judging by the quality of some of the student questions posed to this forum.

Also, some of the questions from "engineers" are very telling when they don't posses even rudimentary knowledge of the subject.

Oh I think this has always been the case....somebody without hands on experience lacks a connection to reality....There are those that have the intelligence to calculate what is possible, but may not be practical in real life scenario...science fiction writers....

Interesting: the futurologist who drew that did come up with one very good idea, a line down the middle of each lane for the sensors to follow. But, he failed miserably to anticipate the devastating effect that technology would have on games like dominoes.

Well, yeah, but look at those fins on the cars! The stabilizing effect of the fins would likely overcome and hunting that the autopilot would do.

Oh, that paracsite is all over the place. No one seems to like it. That whole ordeal with so much hype and time spent digging 'vast treasures' in Al Capone's vaults epitomizes so many of the bad qualities.

.

Remember when it got kicked out of the Iraq for drawing a map revealing aspects of an upcoming attack to be televised to the world. Not just irritating, but deadly! Who didn't at least get a little pleasure seeing it's nose broken by a white supremist?

.

If a place is nasty, there is a chance you will encounter Giraldo. It is best to avoid all exposure.

I have pretty much the same response to Geraldo as to Giardia, not La Guardia. Wretching is fairly common these days when I watch Fox News when Geraldo is on.

Nice mustache though.

Yea it's a real shame no one has ever been able to engineer some sort of system to 'condition the air', so to speak, to cool it enough to offset those sort of solar thermal gain effects.

Those "futuristic" cars from the 50's and 60's were horrible, for the reason you mentioned. The plastic bubble wasn't very good at keeping the sun/heat out of the car. Poor engineering, but what a cool looking car - this design had to come from one of the Big 3!

Sorry Randall, but I have to disagree. If you painted a dashed line down the middle of the lane (at least here in So Cal), you'd have some very confused drivers. They wouldn't know where they were suppose to drive and I can guarantee there would be a lot of accidents.

Anyone else notice the boy is holding a model airplane but not playing the game? In fact it appears only the females are playing dominoes. So the implied message is:

Dad appears indifferent, but is ostensibly in charge of the autonomous vehicle.

Son is thinking about becoming an aeronautical engineer, no time for games.

Mom is just there to look pretty for dad in her sweater, no worries, so she can play games.

Daughter is learning to be like mom, playing a game with her.

Ahhh... the 60s...

My simplistic definitions:

Technicians work *within* (interpolate) knowledge theories.

Engineers work *beyond* (extrapolate) knowledge theories.

Practical scientists/physicists work *around* knowledge theories.

Theoretical scientists/physicists think *beyond* knowledge theories.

Lawyers work "around" the law.

Politicians think they're "creating" the law

Corporations "dictate" what the law should be

Technicians don't "care" about physical laws

Engineers "work" with physical laws.

Scientists "challenge" the laws.

Prisoners are "behind" bars because of the law.

I kind of like how the new "autopilot" features coming out are basically locking on to the car ahead of you as a guide. It assumes THAT car is being driven by someone who knows what they are doing! I expect we will soon see accidents that will involve multiple cars following someone right into oncoming traffic or off a cliff. I'll coin the term right now, the "Lemming Effect". You read it here first...

Re: Technician or Engineer?

The new systems watch the car in front to keep a safe distance, which is based on the speed of both your car and the one in front. The lane keeping system works by reading the land marker lines to your right and left. If there are no lines in the road, the system can't keep in your lane and that part of the system is temporarily disabled - a warning message comes on the dash.

Cars following each other over a cliff? If there's something like the 14 Freeway falling (during the '94 Northridge quake) then you are correct. The distance system won't notice a car that had gone over the edge, so it'll resume full speed on the cruise control and then follow the car in front over the edge of the freeway.
