SS Razor Blades

09/13/2016 6:17 PM

As an old-time researcher, I have to ask the question just out of curiosity sake.

I remember in the early 1960's we used to shave with carbon steel safety razor blades and were told to rinse them in hot water. At that time we shifted to stainless steel safety razor blades; I believe Wilkinson Sword was the earliest manufacturer I can recall. They asked users to rinse the blades in cold water after using. Now all manufacturers produce SS razor blades and I am unaware of any changes in desired rinse water temperature. Any idea why the change in water temperature for rinsing?

I would think rinsing with hot water would allow it to dry more quickly and reduce corrosion.

Some people store razor blades under a plastic pyramid...

I agree. That's what confuses me. Maybe it's just a way to save hot water since SS blades shouldn't rust (well certain grades of SS wont).

It could be to keep the blade from warping.....the blades are very thin...

Warmer water makes any caustic or acidic detergents more active.

dont know what type/grade of stainless is used, but cold water would help keep the stainless from corroding or reacting to the cleaning agents.

I guess from the shaved noggin, and the full beard on the chin?

The real reason for cold rinse on stainless steel, is to not disturb the oxide layer any more than is necessary (although one presumably does shave with hot water).

Hot water definitely for carbon steel, it evaporates better, runs off more quickly, resulting in less corrosion. Less oxygen in atmospheric hot water also.

anybody getting rusty and corroded shaving blade needs to switch brands more than water temp.

I use zirconium coated safety razor blades. I bought enough for the next twenty years for less than 50 bucks. I would spend that much in a year for disposables.

I was told that modern ss blades were coated in Teflon which was why they cut so well - does anyone know this for sure? And that the water temp might be related to that coming off. I have experienced blades going blunt after 1 shave with some shaving-creams but didn't pursue it.

As an aside, yesterday I came across an old trunk when packing to move to Cape Town after 40 years in Johannesburg.

In it I found a whole lot of unused stainless Schick Twin blades in their original slide-out containers. Technology apparently improved sufficiently for me to abandon the old. Interesting, spot-welded two whole blades together. Apparently still sharp enough to cut paper very easily after ~40 years. Don't have the holder to try them out.

I also found a cut-throat razor with removable, disposable blades and a whole box of spare blades. (Edward Weck & Co., Brooklyn, N.Y.) Might be SS also because only rust on the backing,

Also a genuine cut-throat razor in its box (Kropp). These belonged to my grandfather and must be all of 60 years old.

Re: SS Razor Blades

I switched to safety razor blades about two years ago after 30 years of disposable triple, quadruple etc., heads which had become crazy expensive. I bought 200 blades on Ebay delivered for $9.89, and a SS razor that looks exactly as good as the day I bought it, for 12.99 on EBAY. I shave in the very hot shower, using hair conditioner as a lubricant. I usually only use a blade for two or three shaves and toss. It works great, admittedly, I cut myself every once in a while, and it takes me a bit longer maybe 3 minutes instead of two. I like the soak. Any one else made the move?

There has been a change in the mounting method. The old system of mounting was in a metal holder that clamped the blades in place, as I remember, as I never used the old "safety razors". Now they are in plastic. Warm plastic and pressure as you make the next stroke of your beard - could be a potential problem, although I've never experienced it. I definitely use warm water, as I shave while showering. Certainly am NOT into cold showers.

Yeah but....the whole ss razor assembly is in plastic, so the mounting system is vulnerable to excessive heat. Most plastics get rather soft over 180ºF. Yes, there are idiots out there that still have water that hot from their heater.

At 180 °F, one definitely has more to worry about than a small razor cut on the cheek or chin.

no it is not. The blade is ss. The razor is SS. There is no plastic
