I would use a 12 Volts (*) valve driven by a solenoid. a 110 or 220V / 12V transformer and an electronic programmable timer (as used in staircases of buildings for saving electricity). The timer will be activated by pressing a button.

(*) just in case!

Reduce the size of the geyser or the bar of soap.

At least they are clean! I believe some teenagers don't like taking a bath / shower.

Your real trouble starts when they decide to save water and shower with a friend.

There are timer relays that can do that job. We use Koyo and Omron mostly but there are lots of other manufacturers. Check out their website or google for them.

The timers used to control the lighting of staircases can do the job. You have to cascade two of them: the first will ensure the ten-minute water flow, the second the ten minutes of pause.

install a timer that will not activate until coins are deposited. This will still allow them to reset it immediately if they still have soap all over themselves and guarantee they will insert more coins if they are too slow. This will also help pay the water and electric bill.

If there consistantly slow you can use the extra cash to buy a new wide-screen TV.

A lawn sprinkler timer with one of it's solenoid valves installed in the HWH cold water supply line might be rigged to work.

Four daughters, one son plus the lovely avatar caused me to develop an interest in demand type HWH's. It never occured to me to place the HW supply on a timer because the wrath of five females would be too much to endure.

My son and I seldom found the three bathrooms in the house unoccupied so we built our own in the garage/workshop. We deliberately designed it without a door so the women would find the lack of privacy untenable (or we would have lost our bathroom to them as well).

Its not quite as easy to produce what you want electronically as you may think as turning off the timer circuit at the mains will probably reset it unless you have battery backup.

May I suggest an easier method that I think will achieve the result you are looking for without so much hassle.

For sport clubs and other open bathing facilities, there are taps which need to be given a push to reinstate the water supply to the shower or tap, every 30 seconds or so. Time is adjustable with an Allen wrench.

You need to place a non return valve in both hot and cold lines, to stop cold back feeding hot when the timer valve closes or the other way round, via the hot/cold mixer tap.

then comes the shower mixer tap and after this comes the timer tap and it should be a) in a position or in such a manner installed that a bent coat hanger cannot hold it open forever! b) and set for not more than say 30 seconds of water, for a first setup.

I believe that the need to push the button every 30 seconds or so, will quickly reduce water needs to the required minimum.
