Cross Bow Information

05/17/2017 1:20 PM

Hi, I know there is agent who makes bows and I now need to ask for his expertise, advice and possibly, (hopefully) his assistance in producing/procuring a cross bow.

I am in need of a cross bow to fire a blunted bolt, to a distance point of no more than 500m, and to carry with it, a kevlar line of approximately 4mm diameter, across that distance.

The need is for stringing transmission lines across dense forest where a drone cannot be used, (where I am now the drone is illegal to use), and line of sight for done use is very limited. It is also expected to utilse the crossbow for carrying the pilot chord across some gorges.

Once the string is across a larger diameter rope will be attached to the kevlar string and the kevlar string used to pull over the rope, until we can install the string rope for conductor stringing. The cross bow is consider as I should need to eliminate the archers paradox and hopefully set the cross bow up to fire automatically, and remotely via a laptop which would have a basic programme installed to allow for wind factor, setting up the correct trajectory angle in the possible hope that the bolt arrives at the next transmission tower and is captured in a collector circle, or V shaped collector, that the string can be easily captured on the next tower.

If the bow creator, or anyone else has any good input to this, I would be interested to hear from them.

Points of note:

1.Drones are not an option, for now.

2. Access by foot or vehicles between towers in most areas has much limitations.

3. Helicopter use is limited due to various constraints; sensitive regions, down wash from blades, cost, no fly zones etc.

4. Considered hellium and hot air balloon system using ContiTech HeliMax balloon material, however it cannot be controlled.

5. Cross bow is a possible solution so if he bow maker can add comment and advise if a cross bow will suffice at that distance, with a drag of a kevlar string, I should like to hear from him with a view to progressing a design and solution and a cost.

Look forward to any posts.

The audio might be more disturbing than the video.

It was a blood curdling series of screams, God I bet that hurt like thunder on wheels.

I also bet he never tries that or something like that again. Lesson learned the hard way.

We used to have a term (nickname) for folks that just have to try it anyway, even after being warned not to, but I will not repeat it here for fear of being banned forever.

Woah the fo! That's a big boom..

I don't know what that idiot was trying to do, but neither did he. Very sad. Very scary. Thanks for the obligatorily safety video.

For the record l have an 'honorary' pyrotechnics license. For a couple of years l sold all of the different types powders and flash pot gear used in live performance. (Yes there are many types).. on my own time I also designed and built various flash pots and control panels for others. A buddy of mine was actually licensed, but he came to my workplace for gear and ideas.

Any kid that's had a fire cracker go off while holding or throwing a little lady finger knows the serious nature of fireworks.

With precautions and knowledge there's a way to have fun with anything "dangerous" There's also the type of person who could put themselves in the hospital trying to eat with a pair of chopsticks.

I say he rates high enough to be nominated for a "Darwin's At Risk Survivors" Award or this

We have been investigating a blimp, helium filled balloons and the cost is high and the gases not easy to obtain here. I even contacted Goodyear, they were not interested at all. Tried the Airlander folks in the UK and sought out polyurethane, polyester and a Kevlar® like material called Tedlar®. It made my boss cry when he heard the price per sq meter. My colleague is working on a hair brained scheme to support the 3 phases on helium filled balloons. He figures we don't need towers anymore and we can save on steel prices, and foundations. Who knows, it may just work, with sufficient phase spacing and low breezes.

You could use hydrogen, and if you use an inert sheath container around the hydrogen containing balloon, there will not be as much fire hazard (at first). Are you wanting these for raising of pilot wires for the hauling up of cable onto the towers?

I have it on good authority, the Germans high a lot of experience with nitrocellulose as skin material - The Hindenburg used that. Maybe you should opt for Mylar.

I still think you could 99% of the lifts with some fishing reels, and a guy on the towers, you just need high voltage certified fishing line (passes insulation testing).

What if your aircraft were not aircraft at all, but were homing pigeons? I bet they could spool out thin filament like 40 gauge Kevlar thread from one tower to the next. After all, it is only a batter of learned behavior. You could do it with falcons too, as long as there are treats at the next handler (tower).

Too bad drones are out, that is by far the best solution.
