What Is It? (Submission)

08/07/2017 3:55 PM

ok ... per "BestInShow"s suggestion [Post#9, here]:

[ Having tried last Thursday to submit to

"Team for What Is It? Blog" ] ...

As a challenge , I should like to submit:

"Just exactly how large (or small) IS this thing...and... what exactly does it do?"

To the winner, a "Bravo!"...and,

an Aldebaran Whiskey

or other available drink

whenever our paths might cross...(!)

Hmmmmmmm...(())... we *could* fit that term, "bearing", into the definition (I shall try to remember to do so!)

But ... "not quite".

Those are NOT "hard-drive" bearings they are assembling...()...!

? TeraWatt Turbine bearings? UFO spinner-uppers?

This is the tangent Tachyon Particle detector component of the Series 'D' Photon Torpedo, used as main armament on Constitution Class Starships.

We at LynDoor Enterprise Industries, a subsidiary of the good folks at Lyndoor Disruptive Energy Delivery Systems, would like to know how you come to be in possession of this highly classified and wildly overpriced device.

"Wildly overpriced"...(HA!)

I have a 5/8" thick "ring" (of the part that attaches to this) hanging on my bedroom wall... (a "reminder", of sorts).

As the very FIRST prototype of this 'evolution' was nearing the point of assembly, the complex laminated 'attachment' needed to have 1/8" trimmed-off... and so, was sent to the "machine shop night shift" with a hand-written note to do so.

The following morning, the part was returned..."yep"...with 5/8" removed...!

WHAT-a-$etback...!

I think SolarEagles is a wind turbine bearing.

As suggested previously; I hope none of my answers "led-anybody-astray", thus, deserving "complaint". When I stated:

"it's gran'pappy could qualify as sort of kinda being 'something like that'" ... I expected a "come-back?" of sorts.

Looking back, I might ought-to-have said:

"It's gran'pappy could qualify as sort of kinda being 'something like that'... and, for-what-it's-worth, grand-dad, dad, and '3rd-gen-son' ride this wagon-train all together / all at the same time"

[ Or, something like that... to continue the "prodding"...]

Swashplate for helicopter main rotor - allows the individual blades cyclic pitch to be changed during rotation to vary the thrust vector's direction to alter the flight pat. The collective pitch input also goes through this device to control the total lift force.

But, reading: "Laser guidance system for a rocket....",

I spent too much time trying to think how NOT to exclaim that no "laser" is involved at-all at-all...! Being "still-in-my-youth" (then), it was simply ASTONISHING to me, that a rocket ('ejected' from a submarine) could burst-surface, and find a particular STAR (even in broad daylight!!) towards which to "steer"...(!) [Dad was enthralled with Sir Issac's insights, his fervent beliefs that God's clockwork was MEANT to be fully "discernable" by man...]

Should the US ever "lose" its freedoms, it will be due to the fact that far more of the population gravitated towards believing the plates-full of lies, nonsense, and false ideologies being shoved down its people's throats, and buying-into the assertion that "greed-is-good", corruption is "normal", "somebody else is {always} to blame".....

"etc. etc. etc. ..."

My first thought - just from the shape - was condenser for an optical microscope (the thing that goes under the stage to illuminate the object on the slide) - but it seems to have too many unnecessary holes etc. (and your hints don't lead me along that path).

Looks like a swing type bridge bearing. There was a railroad bridge rebuild here several years ago and a bearing that looked much like this one was one of the items replaced during the rebuild.

Ever since Post #1, I keep seeing the term "bearing"... and, my response to that term remains the same:

Hmmmmmmm...(())... we *could* fit that term, "bearing", into the definition (I shall try to remember to do so!)

But ... "not quite"

SO : to CLARIFY : it has nothing-to-do with a (("physical")) bearing...

WITHIN ITS DESCRIPTION, if (or when) I use the term "bearing", it will be meaning the INTANGIBLE bearing, as determined by a compass (or other means)...

Re: What Is It ? (Submission)

For those "following-along", thanks for the great efforts (and laughs) so far.

I hope none of my responses/hints merit "complaint", in the end (no efforts to lead anyone astray, by any means). NO "ANSWER/SOLUTION" here, yet; just "beginnings"...

The unknown "Objet d'art", (as mentioned above) is a work of my Dad... who was guided-along the most "Perfect_Circle" of a career path, doing (mostly) what he loved MOST...while being led-off on a tangent-or-two (during the middle-third of that career), all-of-which "PREPARED" him, to be chosen for this project, as a fitting "crown" to his career, and finishing the bringing-of-him...

..."Full_Circle".

The story of this object BEGAN when he (Dad) was recruited "fresh out of Akron University" as a math major (the US Navy needed a GS-5 level mathematician to work in their R&D department). And so (a couple years before I was born), his first "activity" was working with a several other "math whiz's" to "crunch some numbers".

The gathering of these "numbers" involved a LOT of work with the state-of-the-art tools of the day: his K&E Slide Rule (which I now possess, together with its fading-fast manual!), and... the SEXTANT.

The result of their labors (at that "birthing") was a "volume":

Elementary Manual Of Statistical Methods And Experimental Design” (for which Dad performed the "Final Edit"...regrettably, I think theirs was the only "Copy" ever done, of that work!)

The story shall be finished ... AFTER allowing for a few additional "attempts to win"...(!)

EDIT! "Tony" managed to "pipe-in" whilest I was being interrupted in my composition here...(!?!)

TO Which I should respond..................... (er.....which "missing piece" are you referring to...???)

Without further delay [Doorman, et. al.] ~

THE ANSWER - as abbreviated-as-I-can-make-it, here:

That "Naval civil service recruiter" referred-to in #80 was from the US Naval Air Missile Test Center, Point Mugu, CA). Being heavily involved in the Korean War, the Navy was considering building the Polaris Missile Submarine...but (if they WERE to do so), there were some questions, including:

"With what degree of accuracy might they expect to be able to hit a target, '1000 miles' away?"

[You must start by knowing EXACTLY where-the-heck you ARE, before the Launch button is pushed!]

So, that initial work previously mentioned (using K&E slide rules and sextants), in the document that it produced, supported an "error" of 1/8th mile.

Knowing that technologies were already advancing at a pace that would continue throughout design and construction, decision was made to initiate the program.

Right thereafter (1952), following graduation, Dad's career in rocket motor development “took-off” while attached (as a Lieutenant) to the Army at White Sands Proving Grounds.

GE had finished test-firing 65 captured German V2's, leaving 3 static test firings and three test flights to complete (the static firings to be in support of Dr. Von Braun’s work at Redstone Arsenal, the center for the U.S. space program).

Experience 'crunching that data' (which was alcohol/oxygen propelled, as well as other 'works'... and becoming quite 'fluent' in nozzle design, propellants, and propellant casings) led him into-and-through other projects including a Mark 32 meteorological "Dart" rocket with BFG Aerospace, and resurrecting the Sidewinder (which was about to be scrapped).

By doubling the total impulse obtained {using the original motor case}, its performance has allowed it to remain a "mainstay" in our military for over 60 years!

[The US Navy hosted a 50th anniversary celebration of its existence in 2002.]

A "lull" in such developments led Dad into the field of acoustics, during which period he enjoyed "similar accomplishments" (not for THIS post)... But, having made Fellow within The Acoustical Society of America [chairing a new Task Group, creating a consensus-type standard test method: ASTM Standard E 756-80 (Standard Method for Measuring Vibration-Damping Properties of Materials)]; this "credentialed" him to be called-back into-service for the Titan Booster program. The boosters were suffering "self-destruction" due to excessive vibrations, requiring analysis and subsequent installation of (new) rubber linings within.

Meanwhile, the Polaris sub program was well underway, and, the missile system(s) had already been through several "evolutions".

The ["Final"] version, the Trident II (D5) was in-the-works, when Dad was brought-in to wring-out the difficulties being experienced with the 3rd stage.

Long-story-short (well, 'almost'):

efforts to achieve the combination of range and accuracy were not yet "on-target". After reviewing scads of data pertaining to what had been tried already..."Bingo!" It was clear that a whole new approach was necessary. Having "been through the wringer" with a wide array of projects leading him up to this, the project came-together with surprisingly few "bumps" (one already mentioned).

The FlexSeal nozzle ... an assembly having the seal (image-in-question), with a layered / self-consuming nozzle attached thereto (being much lighter, more flexible/steerable) afforded an even lighter and more responsive steering mechanism, providing the necessary accuracy while at the same time affording the desired improvement in range.

The D5 remains our country's (as well as Britain's) "de facto standard" deterrent...deployable anywhere on the planet...after 27 years in service!

<<linked

Of COURSE , some people will feel compelled to post images of the FIRST D5 launch/failure (spiral) [It goes without saying, that THAT was an error in the 1st stage...]

Re-Cap / "Full_Circle" ---- So, the D5 provided a fitting crown to his career:

(not forgetting the "conceptualization"/"statistics" birthing-phase work)

Having begun his career at White Sands in 1952 ~ Project V-2 ; overall length 46 ft. / total weight w/payload 15 tons; range 200 miles …

he would finish in 1992 on the Trident 3-stage missile ~ length 46 ft. ; weight 15 tons ; range 6000 miles! ... complete with W88 warhead, courtesy of Dr. Teller.

[ I thank the Lord each and every day for the parents with whom He blessed me. And just as important ~ I thank my Dad for insuring that I *knew* "the Father above him"...]
