Stress is what happens when the mind overcomes the body's basic desire to choke the living daylights out of someone who desperately deserves it!

Yield point stress is the point where self control is aborted.

I have an old text book titled "An introduction to the Mechanics of Solids" by Crandall Dahl and Lardner copyrighted 1972.

You should be able to find some sort of text at your local university.

It must be quite stressful for u to be reading all these wisecracks!

Anyway, Try the wiki page on stress and meanwhile...

Nominal Stress
Stress calculated on the basis of the net cross section of a specimen without taking into account the effect of geometric discontinuities such as holes, grooves, fillets, etc.

Ultimate Stress
Ultimate load is defined as maximum load which can be placed prior to the breaking of the specimen. Stress corresponding to the ultimate load is known as ultimate stress.

Yeild Stress
When a specimen is loaded beyond the elastic limit the stress increases and reach a point at which the material starts yielding this stress is called yield stress.

Principal Stress

I found a nice site for u to understand the concept well

http://ocw.mit.edu/NR/rdonlyres/Aeronautics-and-Astronautics/16-01Fall-2005-Spring-2006/3FE13E5D-BE14-4CE6-8607-5DBF5D955841/0/mudzm15.pdf

You can also try the calculator here
