Global Warming - What Can We Do or Should We Do?

04/21/2018 3:46 PM

I love reading your posts - there are some very smart people here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I've seen that there are two camps when it comes to global warming and CO2 emissions. I think we all are aware of both sides argument, so please no hostility with your posts.

What I'd like to find out is two fold.

1. Whether GW exists or not, is there anything that you as an individual can do? Some people say we can change the world, one trip at a time (or some other catchy phrase) but they don't live in reality. Why? Because on any given day, I can see 14 lane freeways filled with cars (yes, the 405 freeway has 14 lanes) emitting CO2 and this is one freeway in one city in one state in one country on one continent - we're not even talking about the rest of the world. So one or one hundred or one thousand or 100,000 or even 1,000,000 less drivers won't make a difference.

2. Some here spend a lot of time defending their position and attacking the opposing side. I know you feel strongly about your position, but what good is it doing? Does anyone here feel that they can make a real difference? And if so, how big of a difference? Or is it all about our ego and proving we are right?

If everyone on this site chose to get rid of their ICE car and go EV, what difference would it make? Or if we were lucky enough in addition to convince one friend ... What will it do?

I just want everyone to think about this. I am not an alcoholic and I'm only bringing this up, because I like this part of their Serenity Prayer (in fact, I like the entire prayer) where we ask God to give me the wisdom to know the difference (referfing to things you can't change).

So, if we can't change things either way (GW believer or non believer), why not focus our energy on things we can change? And work together to solve problems, because we engineers are some of the best at doing so.

Thanks for listening to my rant and please post your ideas/comments.

So let me get this straight. Scientists say that CO2 does not have the same heat trapping capabilities as Al Gore said it does? So, if I put my GW thinking cap on, that means that Al Gore is wrong and his invention called the internet is just a hoax??? Can't be, I use the internet every day. In fact, I'm typing on a computer that's hooked up the the internet.

I think these scientists are just making up stuff, because I know they have to use the internet, which means they believe in Al Gore.

This reminds me of the OJ Simpson trial. Fact #1, OJ Simpson is one on the best running backs in the history of the game. Fact #2, He was on Hertz commercials and he ran through the airport trying to catch a plane - he did not call the gate and use his power to stall the plane. Fact #3, He tried on the glove and it was too small. Fact #4, If the glove don't fit, you gotta acquit. Fact #5, Based on #1 to 5 being true, then OJ Simpson is innocent. Everything else in the trial was just noise.

OJ Simpson a killer! Hah!!!

Al Gore not a scientist! The greatest invention since the wheel is the internet and Al Gore invented it. If he's that great of an inventor, then he must certainly know about GW.

Actually, it is the bloggers at PSI that make these claims about CO2. If you look at the actual paper that they cite, it says nothing of the sort. The PSI site is all spin, no facts.

Hi Autobroker

WOW, you are so smart.

I wonder what you think of our present president?

This thread was suppose to be about how we personally cannot do anything about GW. As individuals, we can't make a difference, so why argue about it. I feel the same about our POTUS. Sure, I can give my 2 cents worth and you and others here can too, but what difference will it make?

The reality is that we can't do a thing. And we have a better chance at doing something about our POTUS (if you don't like what he's doing) vs GW (if you believe it's a problem).

To me, it doesn't matter, because there's nothing I can do about it, so I'd rather put my efforts into something I can do something about, such as building up my nest egg, so I can retire comfortably - it' coming a lot sooner than I thought and even though I'm on track, I'm not there financially.

ps, I tried local politics and I found out that the changes I could make are so minuscule that I didn't run after my term was over. Though I will say that I made some friends and allies, as well as I learned a lot about how our government really works. I recommend everyone who has an interest in our government to run for office and serve a term.

Hey guys! I went to the beach the other day and I think the GW side has something to be even more worried about. The water level kept rising as the day progressed. Kids were building sand castles and soon they were getting knocked down by the incoming water. It was tragic! You won't believe this, but I could actually see the sea level going up. I guess there were so many cars on the road that the ice caps were melting very fast that day. CO2 levels up, ice caps melting, sea level rising - oh no, what would we do. If it kept up that pace ... we'd be flooded - THE ENTIRE COAST OF CALIFORNIA!

Thank goodness the Rams game started! Traffic subsided, CO2 levels fell, ice caps refroze and the sea level went back down. Though the damage had been done. Those sand castles were flattened, not a sign that they even existed!

The day was saved, because the Rams won!

Take care my friend!

You're teasing us of course. But the tides advancing would be a good illustration of what would happen if global warming continues. But it wouldn't go back down!
