The sun will rise in the west

10/08/2007 12:39 AM

Is there any astronomical calculation which predicts the rise of our sun in the West ?

Not to my knowledge. You might inquire at <badastronomy.com> .

If great earth quake happens then there is a chance of reversing of the poles

thus making the rise of the sun in the east .Is it possible ?

The sun already rises in the east. But if you wanted to reverse the direction of earth's spin (making the sun rise in the west), you'll need a helluva lot more than an earthquake to pull that off.

A single earthquake will not cause the poles to flip. However, since the poles do natural flip every so often, I guess magnetic west would change such that the sun would rise in magnetic west. However, since true north and magnetic north are not the same, the sun will always rise in true east, unless a huge cataclysmic astronomical event, such as a planet striking the earth, were to occur that reserved the earths spin (not unheard of since this is likely how we achieved current spin and the moon).

Is that strange theory (Earth's spin due to collision) universally accepted?

No. One prevailing theory is that the Earth received its spin from its accretion disk during the formation of the Solar System.

Have you also noticed that there seems to be some confusion on this thread about the difference between a magnetic pole reversal and the earth's mechanical poles (for lack of a better term) flipping? The latter is equivalent to the Earth completely reversing its spin - a process that would demand a tremendous amount of energy; energy that would simply have to come from an outside source. Mere earthbound phenomena such as earthquakes and tsunamis just won't cut it. These two kinds of reversals are totally different beasts altogether. The former has happened countless times throughout geologic history. The latter would completely wreck the planet insofar as Life is concerned.

(but sadly not all.....!) that's 25%

(You and I are clever) that's a final 25%/2

ok some simple math......carry the 1......divide.....add......ok I got it.

I disagree with .125 of your total statement.

Consider an unknown Planet passes by the Earth with very fast speed but do not

collide with the Earth or moon or other planet .Is it possible to have effect on

the spin of the earth as folllows

1.forces the spin to zero and then reverse the spin for few hours

2.then reverse the spin as before

3.the overall effect on the rotation of the earth is zero

Off the top of my head, I would say that it depends on how close, 10,000,000 miles is VERY close in astrological terms.....

My personal bet is that answers 1 and 2 will never happen, either 3 or total destruction of the earth as we know it!!!

What would be just as destructive is if it entices our moon to leave us or for the moon to go much farther away or change its own spin or any other mixture......the moon is important for this planets stability in orbit and such things as tides.....

You ask "is it possible...?" - not as stated, no. We're talking about basic physics here. One body passing by another would not cause rotation to stop, reverse, and then resume. It doesn't matter how big the body is, nor how close, nor how fast. The scenario simply couldn't cause the effects you listed.

If you rely on a magnetic compass the sun will rise in the direction indicated by W.

Well, that would be determined by the proximity of the compass [C] to the Magnetic North Pole [MNP] and the relationship between them and the True North Pole [TNP] and one were not travelling towards True West faster than the Earth turns.

Given that the MNP does not correspond with 90°N, for a stationary observer on the Earth's surface located between them that statement would be true, as the W point on the compass would point to the East. The world would look like this to the observer looking at the MNP from there:

which is a complete huffalow-dowd of the rotatey-most and turn-it round, of course (which is difficult to say at the best of times).

A lot of things will have to change as well.

South star, Northern cross. . . .

What will happen with the weak Coriolis force and effect?

It may be better to paint the other side of the needle.

Of course I'm kidding. That was the whole point of my post. The sun rises in the east - unless you might just happen to be from another planet, in which case you wouldn't know what everyone - and I mean everyone - on this planet knows, i.e., the sun rises in the east.

If one is travelling east at high speed, faster than the rotational speed of the earth, then the sun would rise behind one, that is in the west! Of course it will go back down at the first opportunity!

If you travel east at any speed you are travelling faster than the rotational speed of the earth. The faster you travel, the day just gets shorter and the sun comes faster up in the east and disappears faster in the West. If you travel twice the speed of the earths rotation, you get a 12 hour day. Ask a Concorde or high speed jet pilot. But the sun still always rises in the east.

The magnetic north pole is likely to point south again at some time in the future. Geological evidence suggests that the direction has changed several times over the aeons. Assuming there are still humans around to care, that will raise linguistic issues, but we already cope with other ambiguities. But the locations of the North and South rotational poles will scarcely change, even if we wait until all the continents have drifted to completely different locations.

Oh, and the sun will still rise in the East.

No not unless we change the definition of the word east. As defined east is the direction the Earth turns on its poles or the direction the sun comes up.

For now I am confabulafrostrumapulated. I usually remember little details....something about 'roses' rings a bell, but there are too many metaphors there. Cheltenham School for Young Ladies didn't instill these subtleties in me.

Would you be referring to Cheltenham Laddies College, young man? Tender years may be a requirement, but any behaviour that might be interpreted as "youthful" is strictly off limits. In this respect I know whereof I speak.

Are you inquiring in an astrological or astronomical frame of reference or in reality?

The reversal of the magnetic poles is a magnetic change, not a 'flip' of the earth.

Whatever forces that could possible cause or tend to cause such a flip would more than likely cause the earth to disintegrate or fly off in many directions.

In 2005 Tsunami earth-quake scientists declared that the declination angle of the

spin-axis of the earth has been changed--but how far ?On this basis I concluded

that flip of spin-axis may result one day .

Dear dude: If you are truly sweating the predictions posted on that website than you have blissfully missed out on tons of legitimate probable scientific issues facing the human race. If indeed our poles decided to reverse, crack open a pint of your favorite adult beverage, slide your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye. It just won't matter what you think about it, you'll be dead.

Dear Abby,

I'm in a real quandry here. What to do? Like, should the world's spin flip, should I tuck my head between my legs and do all that other stuff these nice CR4 guys recommend, or should I divert my attention to some other problem? You know, one having scientific merit?

Dear perplexed,

Please do not disregard this potential theoretical unlikelihood that is completely out of your control and unsurvivable. Instead I suggest that you do the following:

1. Start a web site

2 Gain as much exposure by any means necessary.

3. Build a patented pole switching proof bunker and sell the prints at exorbitant prices.

4. Set a date when you 'feel' that this probably, might happen.

5 Begin selling your new book "How to raise teen-agers after the pole switch"

In the meanwhile don't forget to propagate hysteria. Now run along. My anti-aging potion needs stirring.

"...crack open a pint of your favorite adult beverage, slide your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye. It just won't matter what you think about it, you'll be dead."

On a similar note:

A friend of mine worked at the Adler Planetarium. During one of those Urban Legend scares, he got a call from a lady who asked: "I heard that the planets are going to align and the world will end! I have tickets for a cruise that month. Should I cancel?"

My friend is a man of great patience. He advised her to go on the cruise as planned: "After all, if the world does end, why not be on a cruise when it happens?"

I'm less tactful; I would probably have said something rude. That's why I didn't reply to the original question on this thread...

But she, going on the assumption that she could cancel, might have done so. In this event, her friend would (graciously) encourage her to refund the tickets on the promise that the funds would be wisely invested by the friend in a "newly developed spacecraft, The Ark, designed for just this eventuality."

Then, after the fact, the friend would move to upstate New York, assume a new name, and work at an obscure company called GlobalSpec as their Lead Editor.

That website is a hoot! I particularly like this one:

The following text shows that in antiquity people were notified about the forthcoming end via "The Book of Enoch":

"Behold, destruction is coming, a great flood and it will destroy all living things."

A great many codes hide in this short sentence, and they are relative to the forthcoming destruction.

------

Sounds like something straight out of "A Beautiful Mind." You know, paranoid schizophrenia?

A crumpet is a savoury (salt-and-yeast-flavoured) vehicle for butter, with a unique texture. It should be toasted, impregnated with butter until the butter runs through and eaten while still quite hot, before the last bit of butter on top melts. This is a far more important matter than what you decide to call the direction from which you observe the sun rise, as you will find out if you are ever fortunate enough to experience a well-prepared example. On the other hand, I might never eat another crumpet if the sun were to fail to rise - so don't give up on your prayers to Apollo.

Haven't you heard of recycling? Obviously they cover them over and take them round the side for eventual reuse. Of course, they can only be used about 30 times before they go dim and can only be used as moons. After that, who knows? (I did go to Great Yarmouth once, but there were warning notices about unspecified dangers, so I didn't step off the edge to take a look)

It all depends on your location where it will rise and or set. If your position is at the south pole or the north pole, the rise and setting of the sun will be other than east to west.

It is postulated by some leading Scientists that at various times in the Earth's History, the magnetic poles have either reversed or even disappeared for a time.

If the poles reverse and if you (if still alive!) looked at a compass to tell you where the Sun was rising, it would tell you West (the old East!).....

The next reversal is thought to be in the relatively (near) future, is in fact "overdue".......some people fear that it may wipe out all life on the planet too......

I'll join you. There's enough time before the next line of wrongly magnetized rock gets laid down the Atlantic. What time does the lady selling ice-cream come around ?

I say that nice bar magnet is going to sort of swirl around a bit in lots of mini bars before they all flip into another upside down one. Still, we keep our overall attraction during the process. The interval should be as much fun as the main feature here.

Oh dammit, I forgot to log-in ! I'll come back later.
