Looking for Small blender type motor, please help.

10/13/2007 8:38 AM

Hi,

Can anyone help me find a small motor similiar to the ones they use in mini food choppers or coffee grinding machines? For a resonable price? They will sell a new coffee grinder for $14,99 but if you just try to buy the motor somewhere they want $40 or more.

I need to source a motor for my machine but it is so hard and confusing to do for many reasons.

I need help. Thanks.

I would do what I've done in the past and buy the complete coffee blender or whatever and strip it down to get the motor out!!

It often works out cheaper that way...

John.

Thanks, I agree but need to find a supplier because we want to build multiples of the machine.

Someone must be selling these motors for a few dollars apiece if they are selling entire machines for less than $15 retail

Go to a model aircraft shop, all different sizes and qualities of electric motors......

Aren't those usually DC motors though? I think he's looking for a 120VAC motor...

As far as getting them for a few dollars apiece, that's easy to do - as long as you're building your units in multiple-thousand-piece runs... I've got a surplus store near me and even there it's difficult to find motors for the price that you're seeking. How many "machines" are you making, and will they be built in a single run, multiple runs, or continuously?

Of course, how silly of me, he needs an AC motor.....thanks for the heads up.

Then the idea of someone else, to just buy the unit and strip out the motor is the best idea and buy from the manufacturer in quantity once his design actually works.....

I would like to point out though that mainly these motors are of the "universal type" lots of sparks, commutator, short life especially in a continuous use situation, noisy, often of low quality etc etc.....

Why does it have to be a 120 VAC motor? Now that we are moving into the solar cell/fuel cell era, we lose 10% to 20% of the raw energy in the inverter-transformer conversion from DC to AC. If the output is used directly as say 24 to 48 volts DC, look at the energy we save. Also, if one needs to convert to AC, why not do that at the point of use and not at the point of point of production. This, again, would reduce the waste of conversion. It seems that this project is for prototypes and so, regardless of AC or DC, a converter can be applied for the demo. Don't we do this for our computers, radios, and TV's now?

Hi,

thanks, nice answer, more along the lines of the answer I am looking for.

I really just need a few sample motors for a few proyotypes then a few hundred and then maybe a thousand a month.

Also there are so many different types of motors. Inductiom, shaded pole, stepper motors, about 45 different kinds in all I believe. And then all the controlors and electronics to control it. I just want a motor for a small machine.

I go to Goodwill (thrift/secondhand store) and buy old 'useless' electronics. Children's toys yield the best results for all kinds of motors, gears etc.

I use these to prototype my designs. After finding something satisfactory I reverse search for that particular component.

I have hacked a storage room full of components in this manner. Vacuum tubes are an occasional find. An old Motorola 2m briefcase phone w/ 12v lead battery. One really good find was child's rescue helicopter with lights, winch, and motorized prop. $5 yielded three motors and an array of LED's, switches and power-supply. $2 food processors, blenders, mini vacs for cars, rechargeable batteries from drills (also good motors) and power tools. And on and on.

I have literally thousands of dollars worth of individual components that I have paid no more than 150-200 US for.

I do not know what your application will be, but if a DC motor could do a good job as well, you might find that including a transformer and diode bridge (an old fashioned method, or better still a switched mode power supply) in your project may make a better return in the end......

....maybe it could possibly become Solar driven for example......

I definitely agree with, well, everyone else here. Buy a few coffee grinders, food processors or blenders and strip 'em down. Hell, it's how I get a significant amount of parts for my prototypes. Just be careful with buying cheap appliances - just bought a blender on sale at a local super market the other day and it burned up within hours of using it! (I reckon it'll do well with a 3/4 HP Craftsman router motor...)
