Entering the "Forum".....

10/13/2007 12:09 PM

....has been a bit like entering the Matrix. I have found what may be an unhealthy amount of fun, knowledge, wit, wisdom, rhetoric and humor within CR4.

I first arrived seeking some answers to a thermodynamics question to further a project/concept I am often daydreaming about, sketching up or laughing at!

Since then I find myself spending an inordinate amount of time here. Often anxiously awaiting a response to some important or interesting question. More often than not it is a witty remark that lies in wait for my short attention span.

Even with those with whom I consistently disagree, I find myself looking forward to the exchanges. Even concerned when a 'regular' is out of pocket for time.

So. What about YOU? How did you find your way here? And why haven't you finished that project the spouse is nagging about instead of bulling around here?

Very addictive!! Projects will have to wait until I retire or maybe longer.

I learned something valuable from CR4. I became involved in commenting on draft law. Politicians always needs to have the last word so I deliberately make at least one ridiculous proposal in my comments that they can reject.

Yes that is quite true, This forum is a source and a sink of interest. I have came here seeking and will leave sometime in the future no more enlightened on my desire, but the feeling of participating has been self satisfying

What I seek will take a more personable approach to reach the solution, and may or may not come. The prospect is Ok and is one to live with.

There are insiders and out, no change will come.

"I first arrived seeking some answers" with regard to Stirling engines via Google and have spent all too much time answering inquiries and bloviating since.

'Severity' sort of implies 'bad'. If it does, then I'm ****** ! This beats the c*ap out of watching TV etc etc, and the mad-fools provide it free ! Learning, debate, arguing, fun - you don't often find this kind of gold for no charge ( other than an implicit give as much as you take position ). All systems administrators should divert login attempts to face-book here. Then again, perhaps not, the relatively small subscriber group keeps it puffing along quite nicely.

You know, like any 'addiction', you do have an option. If your partner pokes you in the eye at approximately 3am and asks what you're thinking about, you may well deserve what you get. Pause for thought, and say ' yes darling, but I do it for the greater good of humankind'. Adding the words 'just one minute' will possiblly save you.

Dang it all Garthh, you can at least try say you're doing some country. I told my wife I was just looking at porn and she slapped me, mentioned CR4 and I got kicked from hell to back and again. Have some self respect man, and just admit you like terrible humour and knowledge. It's respectable these days - some geeks have social lives and wear contacts ! Heck, I took a shower last month.

A thirst for intellectual exchange, its interesting to read other peoples approaches to a problem, and their way of thinking. I'm retired, and the tasks that should be done, are not, and I'm not allowed to forget. One day maybe? I enjoy CR4.

Regards to all JD.

I changed my job recently and was googling their background and such, when I found out they were on CR4. The rest is very interesting history riddled with articles about things I didn't need to think about if it weren't for CR4.

Particularly the product launches and news letters but admittedly, the daily digest is taking more time now then quake ever did. On the up side the wife can't complain about it as I am "doing work".

The house can wait, I have things to learn.

There is however an additional problem, I have to get up an hour earlier in the morning as I can't bear leaving for work without arguing with you guys about something meaningless or trivial.

Has to happen to make the day a little bit better. Work is no longer the only meaningless necessity now, I have new friends to play with.

I found my way here through a friend (already a member). I was interested in getting feedback from other engineers and scientists. The forum has been fantastic fom that standpoint, but like you I find I spend an inordinate amount of time here, especially when we begin discussing "hot topics" such as global warming, outsourcing of jobs to foreign producers, etc.

I came to CR4 by accident. As we all are "by accident" (my favorite refrain). I was looking for some answer in Google. I came upon CR4...

I don't rate as much as some of you guys. I am a professional Civil Engineer but do not practise (in Arizona). I still have to do my honey dos. To keep from her, I escaped to Lagos Nigeria (as a Subject matter expert in Cost Control). I like it.

I am just lurking and not seizing moments to get into serious discussions. I am enjoying CR4 immensely however.

Re: Entering the "Forum".....

I found my way here because I had a question about how to accurately quantify the current from an experimental battery I was working on. Someone on a Yahoo group recommended this site, and I figured a forum full of engineers would be the best place to go. Several members quickly replied with the information I needed. Then I noticed the fresh and varied news content here and got hooked (I am fascinated by many types of science and technology). My only complaint is the excessive number of off-topic and one-words posts -- kind of annoying when, after receiving an alert that someone has posted to a subscribed thread, I go to the site only to find an utterly useless post. I know that tech types (including myself) tend to be "quirky", so I have come to accept the side chatter. The quality information and advice available here compensates for the less-than-optimal signal-to-noise ratio.

I find that "most" contributors are pretty good at marking their posts as "off topic". You do know you can switch the off ones totally off don't you? The only thing I don't know is if you are still warned about them, maybe worth a little experiment.

Does anybody else know?

psst, is this regarded as "off topic" as we were talking about something else I believe?

I don't know what you're doing with Kevlar ( a place like this it's best not to ask !) but check out "d30" for fun materials. Hitting yourself in the shin will never be so much fun again. Not much good for 'rip-resistance' but looks good for impact.

I'm sure he calls them 'fur-balls'. Can you clarify please Del ? This issue may be important. Hair or fur ? Do tell - we'll keep it secret, honest ! Also, why do you do it, how are they formed, do they have any purpose etc etc etc. It must take many years of yoga to achieve that particular stance used when bringing them up.

I found my way here through my subscription at Global Spec, when (at some point) its weekly "questions" were refered to CR4 for discussion (until the "answers" were given)... Immediately, I subscribed in CR4... I'm interested in the technical items but most in the science-physics items... I have participated in many discussions, finding there some intersesting opinions, enlightening clarifications and exciting ideas (but, also, sometimes, heretical opinions and fallacies as well)... But the main issue is the communication and interaction between many interesting people from all over the world about enginnering, scientific and human items... This brings people who lives so far away (Europe, America, Asia e.t.c.) closer to each other and makes the world seems smaller... Sharing knowledge between people leads to the increment of the "global knowledge"... And that's the beauty with Internet and forum places like CR4...

(I became a kind of addict too... ...)

I can't really remember how I came across CR4. I'm sure I was looking for some out of the ordinary material for one of my project ideas. Came across Global Spec then CR4.

What I really like about this forum is even though I'm not technically an Engineer (never got my seal) I can join in on your conversations and don't get flamed. Oops now that my secret is out all of you will ignore me.

Plus the fact that I come across so many different ideas and solutions for various questions & projects that I can play with it keeps me out of serious trouble.

Like G.K. I also found my way here through my subscription to Global Spec. I've enjoyed the themes and variations and discovered some very talented, exciting minds who join the discussion with brilliant observations, often coupled with succinct and sometimes mischievous humor.

This forum allows us to communicate as the Conference Room 4 name implies. An eclectic scientific themed conference where questions, answers, and comments are posed by a range of valuable and talented individuals whose talents range from hobbyists to PhD's and in employment from technicians to senior management.

Enjoying CR4, along with my morning coffee, is how I start my day reading the comments of others. I sometimes offer comments which , on later review, I often find meager in content. I blame that on the lack of adequate caffeine.

After moving to Spain, I found it very disconcerting not being able to talk with like minded folk in English! I can hold my own in Spanish but when it comes to talking shop, things can get difficult! I'm sure if it wasn't for you lot, I would have gone crazy by now! It has been a pleasure to meet you all. Here, We all share the same podium, We're free to speak our minds and free to share our experiences.

To show my appreciation, check this out!

I got here by accident and asked my first question wondering how a 35 year old overpass (not subjected to tremors or the like) can just fall on a highway. The responses have been tremendous and I got hooked. I spend an enormous amount of time on this site to learn, laugh and sometimes teach. You guys (CR4 contributors from all around) make the days go by.......sometimes too fast but hey...

I am actually being taken over by my alter ego..... prrrr meow ftzzz.

Excuse me while I rub on the keyboard for a while....

Ah that's better...now what was I saying?

It's actually good to have some engineers to talk to.... I'm the only tech' where I work... so I don't really have anyone else to discuss this stuff with...If I talk tech' mith Mrs Cat she does a reasonable impression of listening...(just like I do when she talks about teaching, shopping, her Mum, decorating, Christmas, holidays etc )

We both just nod and say 'yes dear... '

'Isn't that right, Mrs Cat?'

'Yes dear'

see what I mean?

I used to spend a lot of time with on-line bridge.... but they mostly had humourectomies! The all played 5 card majors too which is bonkers...

Enough already...must get back to the battery making!

What happened ? Was there an advert break on the TV ? Ask Mrs Cat to pass you a Sardine can or something. Paw the mouse gently, these feelings will pass. mmmm Sardines mashed up with Ketchup on slices of toast with a bit of Olive Oil. Late night snacks... mmmm. sluuurp.....sideways or triangles ? Life is full of dilemmas. I cut mine in half just cos I'm impatient. No finesse, I know, but needs must. I don't like the bones in them, even though they mash up fine. Sooty is pleased about that, but the dog gets jealous. Ha ! Oops sorry, the news is back on.

Hook: Found GlobalSpec while doing a search for an instrument, and signed up for a subscription to GlobalSpec. That was about 1.5 years ago.

Line: Got to where Challange Question Tuesday was my favorite part of the week.

& Sinker: Had some extra time one day and found CR4. I played "voyeur" with the site for about 3 months (you folks are a bunch of "nutters" - I like that!), then took the plunge.

Can you say: GUPPY!

Oh no , he'll never forgive me. Sooty can churn out some pretty good 2B, but her excellence will be the day I have a pencil with real 'feal' to it. Charcoal. mmmm. Burn baby.......The black fur gives an added starter. Last wekend she's siitting on the pergoda, and she still has energy to swipe a paw down when I taunt her. Ungrateful cow ! Dang. I found this place compliments of Global Spec. So far as I can remember, I didn't have any particular questions... I was just curious.

I have gotten help several times... I hope I have helped others many more times... and the subject matters which come up get me to thinking along lines which never would have occured to me otherwise.

My wife/girlfriend has her online games... I have CR4. Only current problem is that we only have one machine online and have to timeshare... so I am about 4 days behind on my CR4.

Bill

I am wondering what a cat meow with a British accent sounds like.

I also originally got hooked by the challenge questions. After pondering with them for quite some time I logged onto CR4 for the first time as a permanent user.

I enjoy the challenge of helping someoe find an answer to the question.

I may be the one that usually out there with my offerings but then again sometime "out there" is where you find the solution.

I have said it before and I will say it again. The minds and intelligence found here at CR4 is amazing and I hope I can remain her for some tim to come.

With minds like this we could "Rule the world!!"

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

We don't need a wallet at all! Not everyone can have it!

The Stone Money banks (several, scattered throughout the Island) don't need security guards as well. In case a stone money is stolen, it can not be use by the possessor (become worthless) and will always be found, with grave consequences to the stealer.

One thing I've learned about the stone money, the chiefs use it to negotiate for peace or make amends with an aggrieve person/family/party.

Symbolic/ceremonial money, what an interesting concept.

A physical representation of political capital?

Has no political significance, but it can be a way to rally some support...

More cultural and traditional!

Rallying support would be the definition of political capital.

Culture & tradition always have political implications.

How much depend on the context.

Agreed!

You may want to visit Yap someday and learn more about its people, culture and tradition.

Yap Day is celebrated March 1st every year with 2 or 3 days of festivities. It's my friendly invitation if you may.

The money will still be there, it's simply down the end of that path. The guy who is selling Coconuts (but by now, semi-conscious) at the end of the path, will by now have ample change to give you. I'd spend it on some of that cool reef diving you seem to have.
