The Good Days of English Has Went

08/16/2019 7:23 PM

I apologize for the title. However it does illustrate the point. I've seen a lot of frustration here for people misusing English. For some of them English is not their native tongue. Tolerance is advised. The differences in the following link are between Americans and people on the "other side of the pond" (horrible, but I tolerate it):

38-americanisms-the-british-cant-bloody-stand

I agree with some of them and some I don't understand (maybe because I am not a New Yorker). The author calls himself/herself a Brit (#20). I was scolded on this site a while back for using that term. I was told it was derogatory. It seems not all British think so. I have a couple of questions: how do the British pronounce Z?

What is your worst "pet peeve" regarding English usage?

Seems like I was always getting int trouble in grade school.

Whenever a grown up would cuss, they would say "Pardon myFrench."

So in first grade, the teacher asked if anyone knew any foreign languages.

I raised my hand, and started speaking all of the French words I knew.

I couldn't figure out why she and the principal got so upset.

Tenses_future-perfect

I always detested the word "whom". I never understood the rules and think it should be eliminated.

In the sentence structure "subject-verb-object", <...whom...> is the object. The word always accompanies a preposition in English, as in "to <...whom...> it may concern", etc., in the same way as these are reflected in the genitive, the dative and the ablative cases in many languages, including non-spoken ones such as Latin.

For extra marks, interpret and explain the influence of the presence or absence of the comma in the two sentences:

  1. Let's eat Grandma.
  2. Let's eat, Grandma.

Maybe not. The correct term is "diagram" rather than "outline."

I'm not sure that correct English is taught anywhere any more. Instead, we have "language arts." Syntax really counts in computer programming, which seems to be where the competent persons go, but English class these days is just entropy.
(But with even less understanding of thermodynamics than of grammar.)

Nobody ever says "potahto"; there isn't even a legitimate tomayto/tomahto argument here. You are just plain wrong.

Lighten up! Don't be anal retentive!

A negligible, trivial, or unimportant difference, distinction, or correction. (While "potahto" is not an accepted pronunciation in any English-speaking population, the phrase is an allusion to a verse in the song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off": "You like potayto, I like potahto; you like tomayto, I like tomahto; potayto, potahto, tomayto, tomahto, let's call the whole thing off!") A: "Well, technically, the Hindenburg was a rigid airship, not a blimp." B: "Eh, potayto, potahto, who cares?"

I do not have a problem with most of what has been pointed out in this thread, People make mistakes, fat-fingers on the keyboard or just non English speakers.

But when the press (TV or written word) make those same mistakes, it grates on my nerves. It's like a mathematician saying that 2+2=5.

Re: The Good Days of English Has Went

08/17/2019 5:23 PM

This thread has ballooned to many posts - before I saw it. So I expect this will be lost in the crowd.....

No-one seems to have answered < how do Brits pronounce "z"? >

If it is spoken in a word, the same as Yanks.

If a word is spoken out letter by letter as "Zed".

I write Yanks here because Mexicans & Brazilians are americans, if not Americans - no distinction in the spoken word [ being called "Brit" or "Limey" does not offend me].

In favour of that, with background noise it is distinct from b, c, d, e, g.

On the other hand, if teaching English, why confuse by naming the letter Zed when bee, cee, dee.....zee is consistent?

Going off-topic with something which "jars" me - why do Yanks "jump off of " trucks when "jump off" seems sufficient?

It has already been answered, but thanks anyway. A guy from the midwest told me several years ago about when he was a teen. He and his father had been working in a field and had become sweaty. The father said "Let's go for a ride and get the stink blowed off of us."

Use Barely, in a sentence.

He barely knew her.

Which of course is a physical impossibility. 4th base would be the knewing part, although there is no such word as knewing. To knew is to of known, so the correct sentence would be : he barely know her and that sounds worse than before.

There are many dialects all over the world, and many within the same region.China for instance has7 main dialect groups, but within those groups are many regional dialects.A lot depends on how you pronounce the word. The Chinese word for dialect means "place speak" so there are thousands of dialects.

For example, Rednek Country,in the southern USA,for instance.

If you say they were naked, spelled NAKED, pronounced with with a long A, that means they ain't got no clothes on.But if you say NECKED pronounced like an E,spelled NAKED,it means they ain't got no clothes on and they are up to somethin'.

There is no point in starting now as there are so many and I don't have all day to compile the list.

Biggest problem I have is the improper use of grammar in general. Just like the other 2 "R's", long gone, no longer taught in school, at least that I what I can gather from those younger ones around me.

Ours is a dynamic language that culturally appropriates darn near anything in just about any form.

Now a joke from an English as a second language class. The assignment was to use the words green and yellow. The answer provided was ,"Green-green, green-green. Yellow?"

I am unhappy with the perversion of vowels in the USA. On the news channels I am hearing E being turned into A, I turned into E every day. For instance, I always understood that madison was the capital of Wisconsin, not the stuff you get at the pharmacy!

In my earlier engineering days, it used to be mutually understood as a standard running joke that we engineering-types were actually trained speak badly, write badly, and spell badly, but that was back when we had a generally better sense of mutual humor...

Just as long as any Spanish speaking dude doesn't correct my pronunciation of "Nicaragua", when...basically...they pronounce nearly every "English" world incorrectly.

...that is if incorrectly even exists

Of course "incorrectly" exists, even more commonly than "correctly".

While there may be more than one correct version of a pronunciation (or something else), there are often multiple incorrect versions.

As for Nicaragua, most if not all Spanish versions say "Nicarawa"; maybe Castilian and Colombian Spanish actually sound out the "g".

Pet peeve? I hate the use of "mic" for microphone. My mind wants to pronounce it like the first syllable of "mickey." The older form of "mike" sounds better to me--like the pronounciation of the first part of "microphone."

The English language is full of doubles and triples such as: cite-site-sight, rein-rain-reign, read-read, read-red for a small sample. Wrongly used, they can be quite obvious.

What is your point? With roughly a million words (source) there is bound to be like-sounding ones. Do you want the language limited to 10,000 or so?

Peevication is generally a waste of time and peevicating is generally a waste of perfectly good peeve. Save it for the peevitzation of something worth peeving over.

The EU had worked out the bugs in English.

Re: Contronyms - (I didn't find the following word in the list)

Years ago, a wealthy man paid me to drive his big, black, tinted-window Lincoln Continental from Toronto to Texas. I pulled into a rest stop along the way, and as I was getting out a black woman walked by and said, "That's a baad car!"

That list reminded me of a coworker years ago who had a '56 Chevy. Shortly after it was restored he announced that he had retired it. Another guy was shocked. Then he explained that he had put new tires on it.

Then, there is the meaning of:

  • "It's [insert colloquial and rude word for male reproductive glands ]", and
  • "It's the [insert colloquial and rude word for male reproductive glands ]",

which are complete opposites of each other.
