Volume and Height of Liquid in a Barrel

I have two barrels.

  1. 22" in diameter
  2. 14" in diameter

If I dump 5 US Gallons into each barrel, how high with the liquid go ( in inches) up the side of each barrel?

Assuming the barrels are straight-sided, and the sizes are i.d., ~3.04" and ~7.50" respectively.

Height ratio is pi * 11 * 11 / pi * 7 *7 = 121/49 = 2.47

You have considered barrels in vertical position.

If the barrels are in horizontal position what will be the level , and what is the formula.

To do this calculation with the barrels laying horizontal the length of the barrels need to be known.

Quite true.

When the barrel is in horizontal portion, the formula for length will be automatically included. When we talk of formula, represented by L indicates the length, and absolute/actual dimension is not required. I just asked " what is the formula.

For a rule of thumb,1.5 inches in the small barrel equals 1 gallon,if you wish to mark it with a center punch or other means.

The larger barrel, approximately every5/8 inch equals one gallon.

What shape are the barrels?

If straight then a simple ratio of diameters will give the answer.

Assuming both barrels are large enough to hold all the liquid.

If 'barrel' shaped is the diameter measured at the minor or major axis?

....and come to that, does the curve of a barrel follow a standard formula?

.....and since you have 2 barrels why not pour the liquid in and measure the depth with a dipstick

What about if the barrels are the traditional shaped type...? ...and the diameter given is the max at center id....
