Where do you go when you sleep ?

10/27/2007 8:58 AM

No, I don't mean in the dreaming sense, I mean physically.

Hotel chain Travelodge recently conducting a survey into sleepwalking habits of customers. Here is some general detail. The Times seems to have found further breakdown by region and activity ;

Location/Percentage sleepwalking/Principle activity while somnambulating

Norwich 40 % Open curtains

Belfast 32% Get dressed

Newcastle 27% Eat

Coventry 26% Open curtains

Edinburgh 26% Have a drink

Liverpool 24% Get dressed

Sheffield 24% Get dressed

Leeds 23% Open curtains

London 22% Watch TV

Cambridge 20% Watch TV

I don't sleep much, and never recall having sleepwalked ( though I have woken in some strange places, but that's possibly unrelated). Does anybody have any unusual sleepwalking habits ? Any idea why people do the things they do while sleep walking ? People have literally gotten away with murder while sleepwalking, so don't be bashful if you merely made a cuppa or something. In order to encourage other confessions, I usually sleep face down (except the head is sideways, else I'd probably suffocate). Info from travelling sales reps might be especially useful here.

Take this as serious or lightly as you wish, and post in your sleep if you desire. It's currently 2PM here, so I'm wide awake. The clocks also go back 1 hour tonight so I have extra time to post this odd question. A corresponding deduction will be made in Spring.

Never (to my knowledge) have I sleep walked.? But I did have a roomate that was on K.P. for a month that thanked me for "waking-up", and conversing with him in the morning.

I wish I knew what the H*ll I talked with him about!

Not a sleep walker myself. Have had horrible dreams, violent in nature, when taking a particular med for wisdom tooth pain. It was experimental at the time. Free tooth pulling if you try out their meds. My then wife insisted that I stop taking them as I thrashed about wildly in my sleep.

I do, however, experience another phenom regularly that is very frustrating. I don't know the term, but I have always referred to it as 'road hypnosis'. The combination of sound, sun (light) and consistently passing objects (poles, road stripes etc.) send me into a most undesirable driving state (not New Jersey )!

Ah, you must be referring to "White Line Fever." I experienced this sometimes while driving between Austin and the telescope site at Ft. Davis - a seven-hour trip, usually. Easy to do in Texas.

Dangling from a rafter, usually.

Love it ! What does it do to your brains sleeping upside down ? The pressure effect must feel right strange when you go right side up and flap away at dusk. Does getting to the roost involve some sort of crash landing technique ?

My cousin Vinny had a bad landing one day, hence the rest of us cut of our 'wings'.

It refreshes the brain cells and improves the sonar - very useful for catching squirrels in the dark, darling.

Just a completely off-topic question here. Why squirrels? And why sometimes the Great Red Horned One at his computer? Is there a connection (besides some arcane form of quantum entanglement)?

It's all to do with those binary digets you currently display Horned One? *** - ask my cousin Tarquin.

I tried contacting your cousin, but Tarquin's agent said he was indisposed. Seems Mr. T is off to Leeds to film another installment of Spot-The-Looney.
