Covid Vaccine

03/07/2021 8:53 PM

Who, here, plans to:

  • Get the vaccine
  • Not get the vaccine
  • Have already had one shot
  • Have already had both(if required)

I've had both.

I feel your pain. I went through that, pick an appointment time, answer these questions... sorry that time is no longer available...GRRR!

Doing this for myself and my wife --- not fun at all!

After 30 minutes, all sold out, try again next week!

Now that there are at least 3 suppliers, things are getting better. This too shall pass.

I'm not in any hurry, I suspect there are a lot of people that need to get vaccinated before I do....but when the appointments become more available, I do plan on getting vaccinated....I'm curious, did they test you for covid before they gave you the vaccine?

It seems to me that if you had it already you don't need the vaccine...or are the tests so unreliable that it doesn't matter?

No, where I went they don't test for COVID. They take your temperature and ask you if you have been exposed, been quarantined, had any other vaccinations within 2 weeks, or if you have any symptoms. (I think I answered these questions at least half a dozen times.)

After the shot, you sit in a chair with a digital timer for 15 minutes so they can see if you have any problems.

Re: Covid Vaccine

My wife, a nurse gets tested every week. She has been getting tested for over a year. Three weeks ago she tested positive, so she took 4 days off work by order of the administration. Following the 4 days, she returned to work and upon getting tested, she tested negative and has continued to test negative since then. She showed no classic signs of infection and did not undergo a 14 day isolation period. She has not taken the vaccine as yet. The only thing I can surmise is that either the test process was flawed or those with strong immune systems could test positive have the ability to fight the infection and would test negative in following and continuing tests.

I suspect your wife experienced the notorious "false positive" statistical result.

Re: Covid Vaccine

Every test has a false-positive and false-negative rate. The better the test, the lower these rates are. By adjusting the threshold value, you can trade false-positive for false-negative and vice-versa. I'm betting the tests are tuned towards a higher false-positive at the expense of false-negative. It's better to be safe.

https://www.merckmanuals.com/professional/special-subjects/clinical-decision-making/understanding-medical-tests-and-test-results

Another factor has to do with probability. For example, if you have a test with a 95% reliability both positive and negative. If 99% of the people tested are negative and 1% positive and you test 10000 people, you would expect the following:

100 people are positive, .95 x 100 = 95 test positive, .05 x 100 = 5 test negative

9900 people are negative, .05 x 9900 = 495 test positive, .95 x 9900 = 9405 test negative

Given that you test positive, your odds are 95/495 = 19.2% that you are really positive. Obviously, this probability depends on the actual positive rate.

"did they test you for covid before they gave you the vaccine?"

No, I had recently had a negative test (prior to surgery), but, they didn't ask.

Interestingly the surgeon who operated on my eye said that he had had covid and had had his first shot. He said that his reaction to the vaccine was much more severe than for people who had not had the disease.

I'm thinking that's because his immune system had just undergone a stressful test and was in a weakened condition, this would seem to explain the second shot reactions being more severe...but if he already had covid then why did he get the vaccine, the second shot might finish him off...

I doubt Hayreddin Barbarossa would even know how to post on an English language engineering blog.

If you meant me, no is the answer.

I am pleased that somebody landed with both feet on SE when he blindly speculated about a medical treatment. As usual SE is incapable of admitting fault.

I am saddened that this rebuttal was anonymous. Then again they obviously anticipated a bullying response and got one.

"He said that his reaction to the vaccine was much more severe than for people who had not had the disease."

"One of the studies also compared the frequency of adverse reactions after the first dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine in 231 people who had either previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, or never been exposed to it. It found that symptoms such as pain or swelling at the injection site were similar in both groups of patients, but whole-body reactions, such as fatigue, headache, chills, fever, and muscle or joint pains, were more frequently reported by those who had recovered from COVID-19."

I don't think so: this is quote from the second link:-

They may also be more common if you’ve already recovered from COVID-19 because your immune system is primed to respond to the virus – including harmless fragments of it or instructions for them, contained within vaccines.

And the rest of the article is similar, so, the severe reaction is because the body is in a sense strengthened rather than weakened.

BUT: you were replying to me, and it was clear that you were speculating, so, I am surprised at the anonymous reaction.

No I don't think the body is strengthened after a bout with a nasty virus...it's weakened...the body's reaction may be classified as an overreaction thus exacerbating the situation...the overreaction in a weakened condition could explain the severe symptoms....

When the county emails me with my appointment, I'm going. The county set up an on-line sign-up. I'm not choosy on which vaccine I get. Estimates are that either late March or sometime in April, my category should be at bat. Right now, we're on deck.

Twelve hours after the injection, local soreness increased at the injection site, only noticeable if pushing on the area. Maybe a slight tinge of fatigue the following day, but clearly that could have been 'placebo' effect as much as anything else. Looking forward to #2 later in April and get this all behind us.

Had the second Moderna shot Thursday afternoon. Side effects were stronger on the second shot. Still up and about the day after, but definitely feeling more fatigue and a tinge of muscle weakness. I didn't go to work, but felt well enough to clean up junk around the house and fill the pick-up truck and made a dump run. Moving slower. Saturday morning, everything was back to normal.

I just got my first shot of Pfizer two weeks ago, so I haven't got a second face yet.

Gotta say it was a shockingly small needle cw the jug of brine they injected back in the day for yellow fever. I've had fly bites that were a lot more painful than this. They kindly flagged the site for me with a bandaid but once I lost that I could not find the place where (I assume) the second face or small homunculus is expected....

Anyway I thought I would get a sore arm at least, so I spent the afternoon pulling nails, and the day after as well. Wasn't sore enough. Can't wait for the second shot, they booked me for September but we're hopeful it will get pushed up.

If the mini-me has any talent I'm planning to run away and join the circus. Will definitely need the second shot, because so far there isn't even a freckle.

I had the Pfizer...I believe in April? it was set up at a branch of the local hospital in their sports rehab facility...

I have to say, it was well organized... you in get the shot... given a timer set for 15 minutes to see if you react poorly and then your out.

my reaction minimal Lethargic after the first shot, and my arm just was sore after the second shot.

I plan to get it as soon as I reasonably can. I don't plan to fight to get into line but I won't wait too long.

I know a number of people that have heard stories about the second shot and have decided not to get it. That seems foolish to me. My father's second shot reaction was about like an annoying mosquito bite. My mother was down for about 36 hours but nothing bad enough to be afraid of.

Not under EUA, I will reconsider after FDA approval. If they keep rolling over the EUA for new versions, then I don't know.

Not eligible for a couple months at least, maybe more.

I get tested twice a week at work, my area has had a low case/low fatality rate, and I can self-isolate if necessary.

I've had both Pfizer shots. As Rixter said, that was after filling out the same information many times before finding out that no more appointments were available.

The county signup led nowhere. It took quick action when appointments became available. An hour after I got my first appointment was too late for me to make an appointment for an older neighbor. Terrible website designs.

Literally just got first shot

Houston NRG Park

11 tents processing shots

10 minutes from first check in to getting stuck

longest wait is the 15 minute observation period

this could have happened 6 months ago

could have saved my job

Sorry about your job but six months ago none of the vaccines were approved for clinical use by any authorization. So unless you were one of the lucky volunteers to get an effective vaccine instead of an ineffective dose or placebo then you'd have no early immunity. Even if you were so lucky, you wouldn't know nor could claim it for you'd still be in the blind trial phase.

My 6 month comment was said ‘tongue in cheek’

yes - 6 months ago - nothing was available due to the ostrich head in the sand of the previous administration.

well - let’s see - we were advised to drink bleach- that the summer heat would make it go away among other things

I suspect things might have turned slightly different if we had attacked this rather than throwing verbal stones (untruths)

sorry - birthday is in two days and I’m sorting / figuring what to do with my next move

The previous administration was responsible for accelerating the development of these vaccines by getting the government out of the way.

Your perceptions have been distorted by a dishonest news media.

Look at how they hid Joe Biden until after the election. Now we have a president who can't even manage to read a teleprompter. The man should have never run for president in 2020. I'm surprised his wife let him run. I would have thought she would have taken better care of him. She should know his overall condition better than anyone else in this world and yet she didn't put her foot down. I have to ask, "Why?"

Yes, the previous administration did successfully lay down a plan for vaccines to be developed startlingly fast. They deserve applause for that facet. So fast that some rational people are understandably nervous about the vaccine.

They did not lay down a cohesive plan for distributing any of the vaccines. That was left to the individual states. They also did not follow the advice of their own medical/science advisors announcements on what people should do before wide spread vaccinations occur. They also refused to acknowledge having Americans being about 1/5 of all reported COVID deaths means we are doing something very wrong in our reaction to this pandemic.

WWII: political US intelligence new of coming attack on Pearl Harbor, the British informed them... but there was a political drive to take the US into WWII.

Veitnam: political, a war the was directed by politicians.

...

Covid: Career politicians that initially spend their time ignoring COVID, and ridiculed a president that put a travel ban in place and instead spent their time fighting and stonewalling a president. It was lucky that the president was able to get operation light speed to creat a vaccine, among other responsibility a president have battling against career politicians.

and you make a score card out of it with cherry picked numbers... that’s quite cynical...

remember, the initial projected numbers were 2,000,000 deaths by last fall. (CATO Institute has a good report about it, like yourself, they have excellent 20/20 hindsight)

Your self righteous immaturity is showing, keep wallowing in it,

That was incoherent. I don't trust any of your nebulous, unsubstantiated data.

Wikipedia puts the reported global fatalities from COVID at 3.74 Million. The Worldometer corroborates at 3.76 Million fatalities worldwide. Many have speculated at the unconfirmed numbers but by definition those numbers are not reliable. Wikipedia puts the US fatality at 598,000 and growing.

The Cato institute is a useful Libertarian think tank with an understandable bias. They are not a public health organization nor a keeper of records.

Yes, I agree that Governor Cuomo did not make good leadership decisions about COVID.

The body count is skewed in favor of COVID.

Yes, those number of people did die. That much we can be sure of. The important numbers will be how many TOTAL people died in 2020 and 2021, compared to 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Those will be the telling numbers.

Once the hysterics of COVID are over, cooler minds can look at the numbers.

That cartoon is ridiculous!

First, Columbus was hardly the first to say the Earth is Round, or act upon that knowledge. The ancient Greeks not only knew it, but had a pretty good measure of the diameter.

Second, It wasn't Galileo, but Copernicus who suggested that the Earth revolved around the Sun.

Third, there is a huge difference between censorship, which often has religious foundations, and Fact Checking, which should never have anything to do with religion.

NO ONE can truly fact check unless they have access to the facts!

Since when do people take cartoons seriously. I always thought is was the point of the matter... that matters.

as far as Galileo and Copernicus, religion, in this case, the Roman Catholic Church has stagnant mans progress for over 1,000 years in the name of god, but in reality in the sake of retaining power and control. And IMO, still do.

but since to satisfied the masses with a carton that more reflects history... which is even more ridicules

I've read this several times. Your alternate facts are just that.

Yes, after waisting MONTHS denying anything was wrong, he was forced to act by the unmistakable stench of dead bodies piling up in makeshift graves and refer trailers. At what cost to us were these deals done? Who will get richer from these deals? Guess!

There was zero planning and they had discarded the manuals for this that were left by the Obama admin. They lost the election just in time to allow Biden's crew to save more lives.

Sleep well in your alternative universe.

No. It couldn't have happened six months ago. Our government at the time was determined to pretend it was not real. The government of America did not spend a dime to develop these, nor did the government initiate the war powers act to help make it happen faster. Hell our government wasnt even ready to distribute it even though they knew it was coming. (plus that little deal about Pfizer not trusting the governement not to damage it and so used regular commercial delivery services) wtf?

We have been under attack for a year. Figure it out already.

500,000 families of casualties have.

btw have you added up the deaths from WW1 and WW2 lately?

Actually No. CSPAN. PBS. NPR. AP. UPI. CBS. NBC. ABC. BBC. Guardian.

Places with actual earned reputations for factual reporting not tied into the twentyfour hour outrage cycle that FOX, OAN, etc. and MSNBC fools are caught up in.

Networks that depend on ratings for survival not the funding of ultra rich 1%'s.

Accurate reporting = ratings = profitability.

as Fox learned a few years ago when it lost the number one spot.

Re: Covid Vaccine

Believe whatever stories you wish but get your timeline and verb tense correct. The vaccines were not distributed and into arms during the Trump administration to say lives were saved. There are still logistic restrictions on how much vaccine is available in the USA. You can say that lives will be saved due to the fast actions of the Trump administration. The rapid development of these vaccines should certainly be applauded and is clearly a great accomplishment during the Trump administration.

On this date, the USA still has the most amount of reported COVID-19 fatalities in the world. Rapid development and fabrication of the vaccine will certainly attenuate this fatality rate in the future. But the 534,000+ fatalities in the USA is twice the total of the nearest other country, Brazil. When one accounts for the population size, the USA and other countries that initially downplayed the pandemic have higher fatalities. (I recommend the World Data cite link for one can select any countries to compare. There are a few small countries with higher per million fatalities because the population size itself is so small.)

Notice that Canada and India have significantly lower population scaled spikes.

I certainly agree that early generation and dispensing of vaccines will eventually lead to lives saved everywhere. The Trump administration deserves kudos for this aspect. But dismissing the outbreak as real by refusing lockdowns and masking clearly allows this disease to kill more in the mean time.

Will the early lives lost from divisive politics be less than the total lives saved in the end, who knows. Pundits and statisticians will likely debate this for a long time to come. I do know that it is too soon to say.

No. That over eight week old graph says nothing about US travel. It compares the per capita COVID fatalities over a seven day average of the US in comparison with five other countries. The newest plot shows that India now has the third highest fatality rate while we have dropped to fourth.

I agree that this is far from over but you shouldn't lie about what others can easily read.

Both for me. As an old fogie, I was eligible sooner. I first contacted the next-door community, because I figured it would get less traffic. I got in pretty much right away. Nothing like the waits some people experience.

I'm two weeks past my second dose.

Can I get a horse?

Does this remind you of some forum?

I have had one shot; because I'm in the UK it will be a long time before I get the second (here they have decided to prioritise first shots for more people).

Second Pfizer shot last Monday. Very slight pain which returned a couple of times during the week.

But that would require Global Spec to employ dedicated moderators. Facebook and Twitter have vastly bigger funds and they both notoriously spew all sorts of nonsense.

Just automatically rejecting "keto" and more recently "support" with an option to "change" would go a long way.

Sorry ignore this. Your question was not to me

Perhaps we suffer a bit more from the spam on this side of the pond (before the moderators step in). For ages now (years) the new forum threads list has been filled with ads. for some food supplement called keto, and recently, there have been tens of spoof ads. for various help desk support numbers; I think they might contain ads. for the "target" product embedded in the spoof.

Have I answered your question, or, did I misunderstand?
