Alternative to best Answer!

11/30/2007 5:54 PM

I don't think the best answer will work well on CR4

There may be more than one good but different solution given to a problem.

Comparing and deciding between say more than 20 posts is hard work and time consuming (time is a scarce commodity)

It did not attract much attention so far.

What I propose is a multi format voting forum. with one vote per user.

Format 1 could be a multiple choice option. (single or set of related questions)

Format 2 could be rating of ideas

Format 3 could be a draft proposal asking for comments (maybe not)

Format 4 could be . . . . .

A result should be published - which may be used to start a new thread.

What do you think?

Best answer to what? And what is the question?

The best answer is a relative term. It means different things to different people.

It's like two cannibals and you discussing what to have for lunch.

Would you still want to put that to a vote?

There are some who are not yet aware of the "Rating" button.

I am also on other Forum Websites, where Ratings Systems were tried, and all have abandoned these, because it is all a matter for interpretation, both the help/answers given, and the Rating, being subjective rather than objective.....

I know and that is why I suggest an alternative. I was prompted by a request for "best answers" and a "daily vote" (in real life)

I myself do not like rating but a general opinion on facts only achieved by anonymous voting may give better assistance for a decision.

NB Guests must not be allowed to vote.

The system we have on CR4 is based on anonymous voting, so I'm assuming that the angle you'd like to introduce is the "prompting" you mention above leading to a more formal vote. Is that right?

The system we have at CR4 uses the term "good answer", not "best answer" for a reason. Also, since more than one comment on a given thread can be rated as good answer there is room for different approaches/ideas to be equally acknowledged.

Your idea about multiple formats is interesting. Can you elaborate on how they would be used a bit more?

Thanks
- Mark
