How Do You Feel About No Masks?

05/18/2021 3:54 AM

I have two parts to this post - maybe I should've made two different posts, but they're related, so why not make it into one?

The first is about our country going maskless. It's been shoved down our throats the last year - you have to be masked. We've vaccinated the susceptible part of our population - a good thing if you ask most people. We've also vaccinated a large part of our "healthy" population - there's mixed feeling about this, but it has helped us get to this point. Now there's the India strain of Covid that's suppose to be even more contagious. Finally, have we reached herd immunity with the large number of people vaccinated and quite a few others who have built immunities from exposure to Covid. My question is how you feel about leaving your mask at home? Do you feel safe? Are you concerned? Will you continue to wear a mask?

The second part of the post is about the science we've been following throughout the last year. Is the new "no mask" recommendation based on science? As people of science with an education based on science, do you feel we've been following the science? Based on science, what risks to you see with the "no mask" recommendation?

I'm anxious to hear your thoughts. And please, no political agendas and no bashing others for their point of view. My goal is to see what everyone here thinks.

Thank you.

Re: How Do You Feel About No Masks?

I'll start.

Question 1. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I will feel strange leaving my mask at home. During the past year, I don't know how many times I've left the house without my mask, then while I'm driving down the street I remember and have to go back. We form habits in 21 days, so I've formed a mask habit. Regarding the feeling of safety, I will feel safe. I am one of those who believes that people with strong immune systems don't have to worry much about Covid. Note that I wrote "worry much" we still have to be careful, but not so much that we're afraid to do things. Am i concerned? Again, I can't believe I'm writing this, but yes, I do feel some concern. Why? Because I don't want another spike in Covid and for us to endure another shut down. California had a tough time with Covid over the winter so we had another shut down. I feel for the small business owners who were hurt or their business was destroyed. If we have another shut down, I think many business owners will throw in the towel and that's not something we can handle economically. I won't continue to wear a mask - as soon as we're given the green light, my masks are gone. Maybe I'll have them framed and I'll hang it in my office!

Question 2. I'm torn about the scientific basis of the new "no mask" recommendation. I understand that we're going to hit herd immunity, so masks won't be required. I just feel that we've gone from no indoor dining a few weeks ago to no masks and no social distancing in less than a month from now - it feels like we've skipped a few steps. Science doesn't skip steps - that's where I used to get in trouble in my college labs! Regarding the "follow the science" mantra last year, I myself get a good laugh. First, the people who say it have no idea what they're talking about. Second, since when do we claim something as fact, make demands on our actions, then change our minds when we want to? That isn't science to me. Based on science, I see one big problem with the "no mask" recommendation - we still don't know enough about the India strain and how the vaccine will protect us. I think that's potentially a huge unknown we need to clear first. As soon as we're sure it's okay, then off with the masks!

Again, these are my feelings, thoughts and beliefs. You can agree, partially agree or disagree. Just no politics and be respectful.

Ironically, we feel safer wearing a mask, but the wearer is mostly protecting others from exhaled virus-laden droplets. Once these droplets evaporate, the virus is small enough to pass through the mask. The effect on one's own safety in wearing a mask is small. It's one of those prisoner's dilemma situations where one player's best choice is not the best choice for common good.

Personally, I've only had to wear a mask going in stores, and once or twice have forgotten and had to go back and get it. So, losing the mask is not a problem. I still intend to social distance and definitely avoid any crowded places.

Your comment of feeling safer with a mask... it reminds me when wearing seat belts became law in the U.S., there was at first complaining as well as for a lack of a better word ‘inconvenience’ of wearing seat belts.

but now, if you drive and then remember you forget to put you seat belt on (almost muscle memory when getting into a car now) one feels rather ‘loose and unsafe’ with it off.

I think you meant to say 'free and unhindered' with it off....I hate seat belts, this society has a way of reducing everybody to the lowest common denominator...

Lol... ya,... it all in the perspective.

but, when I had my ‘53 Chevrolet Belair (2) door coup... I felt not only loose without with the bench seats and with the seat belts,... but also felt like a little kid holding on to the big steering whee I also felt like the captain of a ship.

I definitely disagree. My first car was a used 1950 Chrysler Windsor, The previous owner was an airline pilot, and he had installed seat belts, so I have always used seat belts. I do indeed feel "loose and unsafe" when I'm not wearing mine (a very rare occurrence).

Regarding masks, I've been close to a hermit this last year and a half. I have seldom gone more than about 3 miles from home, with only one trip going farther than 20 miles from home. That one trip was to get my car serviced, since the closer dealer had gone out of business due to Covid-19. In that time, I have always used a mask whenever outside my car, and will continue to do so for some time yet. I AM fully vaccinated.

You sound like somebody who's never ridden a motorcycle in his entire lifetime....If that's the case you've missed out on one of life's greatest experiences...

Yes and no. I've never ridden a true motorcycle, except as a passenger, but before I had that car, I put over 10K miles on a Vespa. This was back in the early '60s, when motorcycle helmets didn't yet exist, but I always wore my rock-climbing helmet when riding.

I've always hated noise. If there had been an electric motorcycle back then, I might have tried one...

Don't want to take this too far off topic.... if the reason was you hated the noise, I agree... must be a Harley-Davidson... then you never have looked at a Honda Gold Wing,... those run as quiet as a sewing machine.

Oh, btw, HD is looking at a electric bike... but they were too quiet, so they added an accessory as standard equipment... Its called the 'Spokester"

Wind noise is usually the primary culprit.

Of course, fully-faired motorcycles are generally quiet in the 'envelope' but I tend to ride sportier motorcycles. The wind noise from a helmet at highway speeds and up can be quite loud and I used to notice ringing in my ears after a long ride at highway speeds. I started wearing earplugs when I ride over thirty years ago. You can still hear sirens, horns etc. and you get a lot less fatigued when you get that wind 'roar' out of your ears.

Sorry! I'd be quite happy if all I could hear was wind noise. What I'm objecting to is engine/exhaust noise. When I have to pause my conversation until after one or more motorcycles or other vehicles have passed on the main road about 100 yards away, it's too loud!

I won't make any excuses for anyone who rides unmuffled motorcycles on the street. It's obnoxious as hell and all it does is make people angry at all motorcyclists.

I feel the same way about these jerks with lifted pick up trucks who floor it when they're right next to you so you can hear how big their penis is.

I guess my point is that if you ride a motorcycle with some amount of muffler on the pipes, you don't really hear the exhaust note much once you are up at highway speeds. Oftentimes, the clatter of the engine exceeds the exhaust noise. Even the chain on a motorcycle can make a fair amount of noise. Depending on the airbox, intake noise can be considerable as well.

Well, continuing on this path...

when my stepson returned from tour in Iraq, he spent a week at home where he just wanted to chill and watch some of his favorite tv shows...

one show which I that was funny and is line with the direction was this one...

I like it because it really annoys me, and I thought I post it... it may upset some HD riders... but that never stopped me before.

Oh and by the way, Back in the 70’s, my older brother had a Sportster while I had a Suzuki... I rather prefer a Gold Wing.

Anyways, here’s a compilation of that episode,

When I was a kid, we didn't wear seat belts, except when we were in drivers ed class or taking the driving test! Haha!

When I moved to CA, I was told that it was mandatory and the police write tickets. So, I started wearing a seat belt all the time. I admit that I drive faster than I should at times and my body isn't as strong as it once was (before, my strength would keep me in place as I drove fast). And I am a proponent of seat belts, because it helps keep my insurance cost down. Fewer injuries = smaller payouts. Better for my insurance company = better for my pocket book!

Your comment has made me think quite a bit since I read it. Yes, you're making my brain work!

Yesterday, I stopped by a Carl's Jr (fast food burger joint here in So Cal) on my way home from meeting a client. I didn't want to eat in my car - it's one of my cars that I don't eat in. So I went in and ordered my food. I sat down and did a little work - I also went to my credit union and needed to organize the deposits I made. There were only 2-3 other people inside eating (must be 20 + tables) so it was pretty empty. A homeless guy came in and ordered a small drink or maybe a cup of coffee. His clothes were dirty and he didn't look well kept. Anyway, we have our rules regarding inside dining - you have to wear a mask at all times, unless you're seated and eating/drinking. This guy wore his mask when he entered and also when he ordered his drink. His mask was on when he walked to the table. Okay, all is good. When he went to get his refill, his mask was off. When he was near the entrance, he started coughing ... not a good thing in these Covid days. When he approached the counter, the gal told him he had to put his mask on, so he pulled it up, got his refill and walked back to his table. 10-15 minutes later, the same thing. Mask down and more coughing - the gal again told him to put his mask on. If you can believe it, he did it a third time. Same thing - the gal told him to put his mask on. The fourth time, the gal got upset and told him he reached his limit on refills and had to leave. He argued with her, made up some story about a law which allows patrons to get unlimited numbers of refills. She held her ground and he walked away telling her off. Got back to his table and sat down.

That was my cue to exit, so I threw my trash out and left. During the entire time he was without a mask, I was upset. A homeless guy who is coughing in a place where food is served and being eaten. The funny thing is that I thought about putting my mask on - to protect myself. Then I remember reading your post!

This last year has ingrained some beliefs into our minds - they'll be hard to shake.

As there isn't any data here for <...La La Land...>, here is the UK's current data.

There was a relaxation of restrictions on 17th May 2021. It is so refreshing to see so many people's faces again.

I agree,... and if you mean the U.S. ‘la, la land’, the CDC (Center for Disease Control), last week began relaxing the mask ‘recommendations’, there are political leaders who are somewhat pushing back. Only that they may see their reigning power is coming to the end.

Businesses still require masks, but I agree, it great to see faces again. This past weekend, it went to a high school graduation party, and (2) birthday party’s. One was for a 6th birthday, and the other a 30th birthday with a bonfire.

I did notice something interesting things,...

one, when I’m walking our dog, there are a lot of masks alone side the roads. I understand, that’s the beginning of a environmental problem.

and secondly, initially at the parties, people were ‘conditioned’ to keep their distance as well as a handshake greeting, which I’m sure some people are taking note of to use for the future. But as the party went on, people loosened up.

Anyways, I enjoy finally being able to socialize with a sense of normalcy with out sounding like this guy...

I worked in HAZ-MAT and EOD for many years and we were always "warned" not to wear masks for more time than necessary as it could cause issues with your immune system. We need certain "good" bacteria in our lungs in order to fight off disease. I'm concerned about people finding that they have developed allergies or illnesses once the masks are completely done with. I see people, every day, alone in their cars with windows up and masks and gloves on.

Now I don't know the science behind that but my uncle, who was a doctor, seemed to agree.

That said, I have been directly exposed, maskless, to no less than 5 people who had full blown covid (tested positive within 12 hours of our meeting) and have not been sick nor do I have antibodies in my blood.

I only wear a mask when I am given absolutely no choice. I have not been vaccinated and have no plans on doing so.

I have concerns with a vaccine that was rushed and has not been tested for long a enough period of time to fully know the after effects; 1 year, 2 years, 3 years. And as far as the science behind masks is concerned we have scientists on both sides of the equation, for and against.

My sister who is a doctor, told me the same thing. It's actually bad for your lungs, so minimize the amount of time you wear a mask.

One of the most important things is to stay at home if you feel sick. Geez, this should be a no brainer, but there are many who believe they are more important than the spreading of a virus!

People now act like covid is the only disease out there....and that at some point it's going to go away....sadly neither is the case....The general hygiene that has been adopted in this time of crisis has cut communicable diseases tremendously...I don't think you need a mask outdoors as long as everybody is social distancing or in certain circumstances where the mask is inappropriate....I will continue to carry a mask and use it at my discretion, wash hands after contact, and avoid contact where I can...

The mask is pure superstition. It's un-believable to watch. Masks have never been proven to prevent disease. Doctors only wear mask to preserve a sterile field....or work area. Many, many studies were done before this virus. This is why we don't were masks for flu. Like 3rd world countries do.

There is no science in a mask. It exposes how phony our academics and politicians are.

And how banana republic we have become.

Spencer Tracy was an alumni at Ripon!

Fon Du Lac - When I lived in Chicago, a DJ named Jonathan Brandmeier would talk about Fon Du Lac. I believe he was from there - when I left Chicago, he was still a DJ. He sang a drinking song ... the more you drink, the less you stink, the more you drink, the less you stink, stink, stink. We're not leaving, til you're heaving. We are not human, we are party animals!

And of you make a witch eat very small rocks, she'll float.

The problem is, better mask, inhaling gets more difficult, and you need these one ways valves for exhaling... but the CDC doesn’t recommend them. I’m thinking at the time the CDC put this out last year, the mask were mainly for construction.

Right. Any mask with an exhale valve protects the wearer of the mask, but not anyone else in the vicinity. If the wearer should have any respiratory disease, including Covid-19, the mask does not protect others nearby.

When inflow is restricted you merely increase the surface area, this lowers the velocity of air making the filtering process more efficient and effective, and increases the available airflow...

I recall hearing someone say: If one mask is good, then two is better. Then months later; if two are good then three are better.

And months before; masks are not necessary and should not be use.

I'm trying to remember who this person was????

I've seen some masks on the sidewalk, the curb, in planters and unfortunately on the trails. Who would want to pick one up?

When the mask directive is over, I think we'll see a lot of them carelessly discarded.

Here's something from Newsweek.

"Right now, in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks," Fauci said during the interview. "There's no reason to be walking around with a mask."

He continued, "When you're in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it's not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is."

When people start feeling unsafe without a mask, even after they have been fully vaccinated, that is clear proof of the damage done to the national/world psyche. We know who to blame for that.

My uckingfaye mask is off my face as soon as possible. At this point, I will only wear one when required to. The governor of Maryland has dropped the mask mandate. If a business chooses to continue to require a mask, they are not getting my business.

I've noticed that some people have loosened up their mask wearing, but the mandate is still active. Most people still wear masks in public places, but I see less of it outdoors, which I think is a good thing. People aren't washing their hands all the time, nor are they using sanitizer as much as before - that could be a bad thing. I've also seen a flu running around - it's not Covid 19, but a real flu.

People form habits. It's been pounded into our heads that we need to wear a mask to make it safe for others. Somehow, the idea of safety has morphed into "wearing a mask gives me protection against Covid" and people wear a mask, so they can feel more secure.

Personally, I'm looking forward to getting rid of the masks I have. I'm tired of asking people to repeat themselves, because I can't understand what they're saying or to have that uncomfortable feeling where you want to close a business transaction with a handshake, but you don't want to put your hand out and offend the other person ... and I'm tired of the elbow bump or fist bump.

Hand washing (not OCD level hand washing) should stay. If people were more diligent about that, we'd have far less disease and sickness issues overall.

Keeping your fingers away from your eyes and nose is probably the most important thing to do. Wash your hands before you pick your nose. Really.

Masks are more of a placebo effect. I've gone back to shaking hands now that the mask mandate is dropped here in Maryland and Virginia, at least with those who are extending a hand forward. I ain't skerrred.

However, it is going to be a good while before the psychological scars from this politidemic fade away.

Hand washing should stay... in the states, in public bathrooms... there still is a large percentage that don’t wash their hands after they’re done.

Psychological scars will take a long time to go away, since the media has done a great job scaring the daylights out of regular folks. This is a tragedy and many won't feel comfortable in a "normal" environment - at least for quite a while.

The other thing that worries me is how "they" figured out that "we" can be scared into doing something so unnatural as wearing a mask.

An interesting question for each of us is: why do you/did you wear a mask during the past year+? I bet there's a lot of people who believe they were going to die if they were infected.

I always believed the mask was a placebo for most situations. Obviously, if you are a doctor touching a patient, a mask provides protection for close-in quarters. My belief has always been, that if you are six feet apart, the mask is pointless.

I only wore it because my employer required it and when going into stores because it was required.

COVID has been a weird disease. People who you wouldn't have thought would have died, did. And others who you thought would die, didn't. A co-worker of mine with significant respiratory issues, who you can hear wheezing in the office three cubicles away, had been hospitalized for lung disease for weeks about ten years ago, and probably only has about 30% lung function and he is thin as a rail, almost gaunt, contracted COVID this past Christmas from a family member and sailed through it with hardly any issues. He had two positive tests to confirm his mild symptoms.

There is still much we don't know about this disease.

I know quite a few people and not one has died from Covid. Though there are some that have had a hard time with it. And I've been told by some that they know someone (personally know the person) who died from it.

It's an odd virus. I read that some are having trouble months after it exited their body. And like you said, some who you think would have a hard time just breeze through it.

My thought is that there are multiple strains going around. I think the early strain (Dec 2019 thru Apr 2020) was a bad one. In May and on, we didn't have much of a Covid problem here in CA. The strain that hit in late fall thru Feb 2021 seems to have been more contagious, but not as harsh. Even though we had more deaths during that period, we also had a lot more people who were sick.

I hope we get through this and we get back to normal as soon as we can.

Re: How Do You Feel About No Masks?

..."The recent COVID-19 outbreak has stimulated a public-driven movement for prevention. Google searches for the terms “face mask” and “hand sanitizer” spiked approximately 100-fold in Taiwan following the first COVID-19 case, resulting in a shortage of masks and leading to government investment in the production, rationing, and distribution of masks (Figure 1) post week 5 since 1 January 2020.

During the following months, severe complicated influenza and IPD cases declined as compared to the 6-year averages.

What started as a higher than average severe complicated influenza season dropped to a 6-year low, with rates during the spring months approximately 10% of the 10-year average.

These differences may have been due to an earlier than average occurrence of the influenza season, but the absolute baseline was significantly lower than that observed previously. Another interesting observation was that the incidence rates were not only lower, but also reached a persistent zero level for a continuous period of 3 months, which has never been seen before.

IPD diagnoses have also reached record lows (over two standard deviations below the 10-year mean). Due to zero new COVID-19 cases for a continued duration, the government retracted mask rationing after week 21, which led to a further increase in Google searches for “face mask” for online shopping."...

This shows with the improvement in hygiene that has taken place, that most communicable and infectious diseases could be minimized if not wiped out completely...

"This shows with the improvement in hygiene that has taken place, that most communicable and infectious diseases could be minimized if not wiped out completely..."

I disagree. That assumption is only based on those limited inputs for comparison. And a sterile world could endanger us. It might shorten lifespan.

We hardly had any, if any, flu here this year. I believe our most probable vehicle for our infectious diseases is our schools. But, that's just a guess.

We would have to have lots of normal activity data before that virus, and lots after, for to compare as to why the flu went down with the activity change. Both of those activity sets are very small. It might require more events to find the reason.

Do you think we will have more "virus events" now? Are they natural events?

How Many Coronaviruses Are There?

Coronaviruses didn’t just pop up recently. They’re a large family of viruses that have been around for a long time. Many of them can cause a variety of illnesses, from a mild cough to severe respiratory illnesses.

The new (or “novel”) coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is one of several known to infect humans. It’s probably been around for some time in animals. Sometimes, a virus in animals crosses over into people. That’s what scientists think happened here. So this virus isn’t new to the world, but it is new to humans. When scientists found out that it was making people sick in 2019, they named it as a novel coronavirus.

Human Coronavirus Types

Scientists have divided coronaviruses into four sub-groupings, called alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. Seven of these viruses can infect people:

  • 229E (alpha)
  • NL63 (alpha)
  • OC43 (beta)
  • HKU1 (beta
  • MERS-CoV, a beta virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)
  • SARS-CoV, a beta virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
  • SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19

How Do Variants Happen?

Coronaviruses have all their genetic material in something called RNA (ribonucleic acid). RNA has some similarities to DNA, but they aren’t the same.

When viruses infect you, they attach to your cells, get inside them, and make copies of their RNA, which helps them spread. If there’s a copying mistake, the RNA gets changed. Scientists call those changes mutations.

These changes happen randomly and by accident. It’s a normal part of what happens to viruses as they multiply and spread."...

https://www.webmd.com/lung/coronavirus-strains#1

Corona viruses are many in number and have existed probably since the beginning of time...we only take notice when one starts killing in great numbers...as time goes on more and more variants or mutations come to light, there is no reason to think this will stop...Just like we get variations of the flu every year, this would be the case with covid...the effectiveness of the vaccines remains to be seen, but we can be sure that other viruses and variants will emerge over time and we need to be prepared....There is no danger of creating a sterile environment as you say...

I watched that earlier tonite. I hadn't been watching FOX lately, but I did catch that tonight. It's going to be quite a summer. We have the UFO report and the IG report about that report, coming. I hear we're gonna get the Durham report this summer. I'll believe that when I see it. We have the election audits. We have the Supreme court rulings. The covid vaccination policy. Covid source. Federal inflationary spending plans. And who knows what is coming with the future.

Shouldn't be boring. Who knows, maybe we have welcomed off world visitors. I don't think anything could shock me now. All shocked out.

Wow, that's a really great article. I learned a lot from reading it, but the question of it being man made or coming from nature still isn't known. It'll be interesting to see what news comes out next.

Thanks for sharing!

I find the term "man-made" to be discriminating as it could easily have been a woman.

Careful making a statement like that... it’ll upset the denying deniers.

Good answer!

I'll add a little to your response.

1. The world has become smaller. Travel around the globe is happening (was happening prior to Covid is a better way to put it). A virus can spread as the host (us) travels.

2. We are invading on lands that were not inhabited. We may come into contact with an animal that has a virus (corona or other type) which passes to us.

3. Some will not like what I'm about to write, but there's some truth in it - if you believe Darwanism. The strong survive. Nature has a way of killing off the weak. Covid 19 seems like it was suppose to do the same. Kill off a large population of humans who have impacted immune systems or genetic weakness.

4. Is it possible that Covid 19 was around a very long time and maybe it did kill off a large portion of the human population, then it stayed "dormant" in a place where humans wouldn't contact animals? When we intruded on the animal's habitat, voila Covid 19 in the population. Just a theory.

Three words: Gain Of Function

Over a year ago, researchers examining the DNA of this virus concluded that the sequences were very unlikely the result of natural mutations. Of course they were soundly drummed out of the conversation by those propping up China. Fauci has been trying to sweep his involvement with the Wuhan lab under the rug and he is stepping up his obfuscation dance moves. More FOIA actions hopefully will bring all of this to light for as the Washington Post proudly claims,

The irony of their tagline is not lost on me.

People love Fauci. They think he's a scientific genius!

Personally, I don't feel I can trust him. Why? For one, he has a dishonest look on his face. He also has not been consistent with his "expert" advice. I don't know what his agenda is, but I've heard a lot of speculation. I hope the truth comes out!

The father of one of my co-workers had in the past (not recently) worked with Lord Fauci at the NIH. His father told my co-worker that Fauci was always a doom-and-gloom guy and always assumed the worst. Fauci's flip-flops and his unwillingness to admit that "we" just don't know right now made me suspicious of him from the beginning. Now that it is becoming apparent that Fauci may have been less than candid about the lab in Wuhan . . . .

Fauci initially was respected, a person in place to protect Americans... as it’s turning out, Fauci is nothing more than another sleazy bureaucrat.

I would disagree, As the highest paid government bureaucrat, he is protecting both his job and the power it holds.

I see what you're saying. I guess where I was coming from was that in the context of this most recent COVID situation, his actions appeared to be motivated more for political reasons than medical reasons. Yes, self-preservation reigns high.
